Acts 7: 37-38
37 “This is the Moses who told the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own people.’ 38 He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors; and he received living words to pass on to us.

New International Version (NIV)
“The church is a non-prophet organization.” Do you agree? For tax purposes, churches in our country are identified as “not for profit” organizations. But where are the prophets? Who speaks for God?

Stephen spoke prophetically when he talked about Moses. Moses promised Israel that God would not leave them without a word. When he climbed Mt. Nebo, he did not descend. But God raised up Joshua to lead the people. Moses looked further into the future, to a time when another messenger would come, not just to speak a word from God, but a word as God.

When Moses received messages from God, he spoke “living words” to the people. Our God is alive. Those who speak for him offer life-giving, living words from God. God is in favor of life. He wants people to live abundantly and eternally. The true prophet speaks from God’s word today with a broken heart. Their role is not to predict the future, but to say, “Thus says the Lord.”

How do we know what God says? He has spoken once and for all, in and through his Son (Hebrews 1:1-4). As long as we have Jesus, we will never be a non-prophet organization. When Jesus was baptized, the voice from heaven said, “This is my Son whom I love. Listen to him.”

Pray with me:
Father, thank you for speaking through your Son. Help us to listen closely to his words in the scriptures. Our hearts resonate with the song, “Sing them over again to me, wonderful words of life. Let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life.  . . . Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.” Life-giving God, thank you for giving us life. Let our words offer your life to others today, we pray, in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
