Career Pillar
Empowering Growth!
¡Empodérate!

LMSA Southeast Regional Conference
On March 15, the Career Pillar facilitated two breakout sessions at the 16th annual LMSA Southeast Regional Conference, hosted at Duke. These sessions, adapted from the virtual cafecitos, featured Dr. Andrea Díaz Stransky and Dr. Raphael Valdivia in a live format, tailored for medical students and other conference attendees. Discussions focused on the role of Latiné cultural values in our community, navigating shifting political landscapes, mentorship, and more. We extend our gratitude to Dr. Díaz Stransky and Dr. Valdivia for sharing their insights and experiences in these meaningful conversations.

Several ¡DALHE! members and leaders also attended the LMSA Conference Gala, where they learned from featured speakers, enjoyed networking and engaging with fellow LMSA members and future Latiné physicians.

February Virtual Cafecito with Andrea Thoumi, MPP, MSc

On February 14, the ¡DALHE! Career Pillar had the privilege of hosting Andrea Thoumi, MPP, MSc, a first-year doctoral student at Duke University’s Department of Population Health Sciences, for a dynamic Virtual Cafecito session. Ms. Thoumi shared not only her inspiring career journey and current work but also valuable insights on personal and professional growth in the health equity space. Below are the key takeaways from her conversation, offering a wealth of advice on relationship-building, mentorship, career flexibility, cultural identity, and resilience.
Key Takeaways
  • Be intentional About Building Relationships: Focus on building strong, lasting relationships through genuine engagement and mutual support. Take time to engage in professional spaces and connect authentically, rather than viewing interactions as transactional.
  • Mentorship: Learning & Guiding with Purpose: Both being mentored and mentoring others offer valuable experiences. Build strong relationships with those who can provide guidance as a mentee, and as a mentor, meet mentees where they are, creating opportunities for them to gain confidence and navigate their own paths.
  • Embrace Career Flexibility & Growth: Career paths are rarely linear. Be open to shifts in research focus, funding changes, and new opportunities, as these can lead to meaningful work and personal growth.
  • Leverage Cultural Identity as a Strength: Background and lived experiences provide unique perspectives that enrich research, policymaking, and community engagement. Embrace and incorporate cultural identity in professional spaces to drive more inclusive and impactful solutions.
  • Resilience and Upholding Values in Challenging Times: Navigating uncertainty and adversity requires resilience while staying true to one’s values. Maintain core principles during difficult circumstances to guide decisions and actions, ensuring continued progress with purpose and integrity.
Thank you to Ms. Thoumi for sharing her story and insights with the group! Our next virtual Cafecito will take place in May/June, more details to come!

Community Pillar
Strengthening Bonds!

¡Fortalece los vínculos!

The ¡DALHE! Community Pillar is thrilled to announce  we have the eight volunteers needed for our Habitat for Humanity activity on Saturday, May 3rd, in Durham. Rain or shine, our volunteers will  assist with various projects such as framing, painting, landscaping, site clean-up, and more.

Although registration for this event is now closed, we had such an enthusiastic response that we will be organizing another volunteer opportunity with Habitat in the fall of 2025. Keep an eye out for the call to volunteer this summer for the fall event. We look forward to making a positive impact together!

Culture Pillar
Celebrating Our Roots, Sharing Our Stories!
¡Celebra tus raíces!

On March 6th, members of ¡DALHE! participated in a powerful guided tour of the exhibition By Dawn's Early Light by Xuxa Rodríguez at the Nasher Museum.

The years 2024 and 2025 mark the 60th anniversaries of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, two transformative laws that significantly improved the lives of marginalized groups in the U.S., including people of color, women, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities. These Acts were the result of nearly a century of activism.

The exhibition delves into the historical context of these laws, referencing the U.S. Constitution's Preamble and the rights outlined in the First, Second, and Fourteenth Amendments. Through selections from the Nasher's permanent collection, the exhibition engages with themes of nation-building, the right to assemble, the pursuit of the American dream, and the evolving meaning of "we the people."
Join us for our next activity at the Nasher!
