A Note from Hitinder GurmConsortium work has led to myriad successes that improve quality of care and outcomes for patients across Michigan and globally.
In this issue of our newsletter, you will read how Michigan exceeds the nation on key measures that include prescribing guideline-recommended medications, lowering transfusion rates, and increasing referrals to cardiac rehab. You will learn what BMC2 data have taught us about the impact of race and socioeconomic deprivation on outcomes following lower extremity bypass. You will find new resources for sharing post-PCI procedure discharge instructions with patients, multi-modal materials created in partnership with our Patient Advisory Council.
I will have the honor of sharing the rich history and the impact of BMC2 at the 25th annual meeting of Cardiac Care Outcomes Assessment Program (COAP) in Seattle on June 7th. COAP is the cardiac quality improvement collaborative for PCI and cardiac surgery in Washington state and they are very interested in adopting many of our practices and resource for quality improvement. It is wonderful to see that our work is having an impact outside Michigan.
We look forward to learning, sharing, and networking with you in person as we gather in May for the PCI Coordinator Meeting and the PCI Collaborative Meeting, in Ann Arbor, and the Vascular Surgery Physician Meeting in Boyne Falls. THANK YOU for your partnership today and always.

Demonstrating the Power of CQIsA recent analysis of BMC2 and MISHC data compared to national registry data partners revealed a variety of critical-to-quality measures on which Michigan participants excel. These measures include the prescription of guideline-recommended medication at discharge, increased referral to cardiac rehab, decreased length of hospital stay, decreased rates of transfusion, and more.
Patients in Michigan clearly benefit from the strength of the collaborative work of BMC2 through improvements in care and outcomes.
Read our full article on these measures, and view the corresponding graphs, on our blog.

New Resource on Post-procedure Care for Patients Undergoing PCIMembers of the consortium and our Patient Advisory Council collaborated to create supplemental instructions for discharge after percutaneous coronary intervention. This two-sided document includes written instructions and an infographic. It helps patients recognize which adverse symptoms to watch out for and includes parameters for calling your doctor versus 911 when symptoms arise. The document also contains a section on what patients should know about their medications and a reminder for patients to schedule their first cardiac rehab appointment.
A video version of the document is available on YouTube for those with barriers to sight or reading. We encourage hospitals to include this resource in their discharge packet for PCI patients to provide a quick look at the most important things to know after discharge, as a supplement to the more detailed and lengthier after-visit summary.
