When hurricanes come to our part of the world, local authorities tell people to prepare and make a plan. Years ago, we spent sixteen hours on the road with thousands of our neighbors running from Rita. In the same way, we need an exit strategy from sin. Someone said, "Flee from temptation and leave no forwarding address!"
Lot had a hard time leaving his home in Sodom. He had become comfortable and acclimated with the sinful city where he resided. Perhaps sin had desensitized him. When it was time to go, the angels urged him to find any others who might leave with him. His sons-in-law thought he was joking when he told them to join him in leaving Sodom.
Finally, the angels hurried Lot, his wife, and his two daughters out of town. Remember Abraham's negotiation. It turns out there were not even ten righteous people for whom God might spare the city. Even as Lot and his family left, he balked. The angels took him by the hand and sent his family on their way with instructions: "Don't look back and don't stop. Flee to the mountains."
We do not naturally drift closer to God. Are we conforming to the world's standards and compromising our own? Have we decided that sin is no longer sin? Today and every day, we decide whether we will go God's way or the way of the world. Let us choose well.
