Through hands-on lessons, students construct edible cars, lava lamps, 3-D solar systems, slime, and even bake cookies! They also hear speakers from many different professional fields such as teachers, police officers and medical professionals. This gives them a chance to preview the education and skills required for their dream jobs.
PENCIL's PACE program is staffed by AmeriCorps Members through a grant from Volunteer Tennessee, and is also funded by Nashville’s Community Enhancement Fund and Comcast. The program serves students at Apollo, Creswell, Donelson, Madison, Oliver and Wright middle schools. "My passion is investing in the lives of youth," said Cristina Ortiz, Director of PACE. "This is the perfect avenue. I know we have a program that makes a difference now but can also change the future. PACE gives our students direction by helping them identify their dreams and giving them the freedom to become passionate about them. All of our PACE instructors are so dedicated and have such a strong commitment to their program and students.”
