Mayor Finch: "More kids in Bridgeport and more kids across state will be prepared to one day attend college and compete for 21st century jobs"
This week, Governor Dannel P. Malloy signed two pieces of legislation into law: One that formally established the Office of Early Childhood, and one that expands pre-K access for kids across the state, including those in Bridgeport (click here to read more: http://1.usa.gov/1mGSxRz). In response, Mayor Bill Finch made the following statement:
“As a parent, and mayor of the state's largest city, I've seen firsthand how tough it is for kids who don't have access to high-quality early childhood education. And, research is clear: If kids aren't reading at the level they should be by third grade, they're less likely to graduate. We need to do more for our kids.
“That’s why I’m thrilled that Gov. Malloy signed this legislation, enhancing the ability of kids across Connecticut to access high-quality pre-K. In Bridgeport, our state’s largest city, we can currently accommodate 450 new pre-K slots that haven’t been filled yet. And, since this bill creates an additional 1,020 slots for kids across the state, I’m hopeful that we’ll now be able to fill many of these new slots in the upcoming year.
“Because of Gov. Malloy’s actions, more kids in Bridgeport and more kids across Connecticut will be prepared to one day attend college and compete for 21st century jobs.”

Mayor Finch: "Remembering JFK on his birthday, and his gift to us" - Connecticut Mirror

To mark President John F. Kennedy's 97th birthday, Mayor Bill Finch penned an Op-Ed for the Connecticut Mirror this week.
It’s hard to believe President John F. Kennedy might have turned 97 today. I often wonder how much better America could have been if not for losing his idealism and courage so soon.
Though I was young when he was taken from us, I knew, as did many others, that this was a leader to follow.  Perhaps his greatest birthday present is the millions of people who serve the public because of him.
And, as I speak with my kids about President Kennedy this week, as much as I want to dwell on what might have been if he lived until the age of 97, instead I can’t help but focus on his optimism, his leadership, and the investments he made in America’s future.
I tell my kids that President Kennedy had unmatched optimism. He had big thoughts, and spoke them loud while asking us to follow. At a time when racial discrimination was widespread in America, President Kennedy rightly professed that all people are equal, regardless of race or color.

A pocket park on the corner of Main and Gold streets in the Downtown North neighborhood.
The Connecticut Post, this week posted an update on development in Downtown North, the six blocks of Bridgeport's Main Street to the north of Fairfield Avenue.
Mayor Bill Finch's administration in 2012 split the city-owned acreage into four different projects and chose several developers to convert the historic buildings into hundreds of units of housing and several thousand square feet of retail and commercial space.
