Invest in our community with a year-end gift to the GLMS Foundation
So far this year, your GLMS Foundation has raised an incredible $145,179.31. Every dollar goes toward making a difference in the lives of our community, but we need your continued generous support to expand our reach and create more meaningful programs. Together, let’s continue to build a stronger, healthier and more-connected Louisville. Every donation counts, and we’re grateful for any support you can provide.

11th Annual Wear the White Coat Experience
This year’s Wear the White Coat program was a resounding success! Lifetime connections were made, and both our physicians and community leaders had a great time with the shadowing process, helping to bridge the gap in understanding health care from both sides. To view photos from the “Pre-Op” breakfast and “Post-Op” dinner, click here. If you would like to volunteer to be a physician preceptor next year, please contact kathryn.vance@glms.org.
The DeWeese Medical Student Advocacy Fund
The GLMS Foundation is pleased to announce the creation of a new charitable fund aimed at assisting UofL medical students to engage in advocacy. This fund is named in loving memory of Dr. Bob DeWeese who highly valued advocacy and dutifully served the 48th district as a legislator for 24 years in the Kentucky House of Representatives.
The DeWeese Family made a donation of $10,000 to begin this fund to help defray travel and accommodation costs for attending advocacy meetings in cities outside of the Louisville area such as the AMA Annual Meeting in Chicago and the AMA Medical Student Advocacy Conference in Washington D.C. The Foundation will begin providing financial assistance for advocacy students for UofL medical students beginning in 2025.

We know that you’re busy, but you still find time to do a lot for and in our community. If you’ve captured photos throughout 2024 and are willing to help us show what you’re doing, would you share your photos with us?

Technology is revolutionizing medicine, giving us the ability to diagnose and treat like never before and tech like AI has found its way into clinics, ERs and ORs across the country. This month, our members are looking at how they’ve integrated new tech into their practices and what changes they see on the horizon. Read more in this month’s Louisville Medicine.
Kindness and compassion are guiding principles for Dr. Zubi Suleman. She is an Assistant Professor in the UofL Department of Psychiatry and works at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center, where she is the Site Director for the UofL residency program. One of her greatest passions is advocacy for awareness and treatment of eating disorders. Read more about the work she’s doing to help her patients and our community at large in this month’s Dr. Who.

Louisville Medicine upcoming themes:
January – Beyond Borders: Health Care Around the World – due 12/1
If you’ve trained, practiced or served on a medical mission in another country, what similarities and differences do you see between our health care system and those overseas? What can we learn to better understand complex factors including quality, access, cost and regulatory standards?
February – Prescribing Change: Your Personal Journey with Advocacy – due 1/1
Physicians have a unique opportunity and responsibility to advocate for policies that advance patient care, improve public health and strengthen the health care system. What has been your personal journey with advocacy and how has it shaped your perspective on practicing medicine?
March – Embracing Change in Modern Health Care – due 2/1
The doctors’ lounge of 50 years ago is unrecognizable today. EMRs are the rule, paper records the exception. Telehealth and AI are present in most practices in some form. While not always the most popular, these changes to modern health care are the standard. How do you adapt to these changes to ensure that you are providing quality patient care?
Please reach out to Kathryn Vance at kathryn.vance@glms.org if you’d like to share your thoughts in an upcoming issue.
