MAY 2017, ISSUE NO. 2
New Miami Family Member,

We are excited for you and your student to join the Miami University community this fall. New Student Orientation and Family Orientation set the stage for the student's transition and your support through that transition, and serves as a great opportunity for families and the University to get to know each other as partners. If you are not yet registered to attend Family Orientation, your student can do so by adding you as a guest on their orientation registration.

Please read this entire message, as it contains deadlines and tips for making the most of orientation. Your student has also received information about the student Pre-Orientation Checklist, containing many important steps to take prior to arriving for orientation. A final email with packing, parking, and arrival information will be sent to your student's Miami email account approximately one week before the first day of their orientation session.

Important items from the student list include:
  • Take the math and foreign language placement tests, which must be completed at least one week prior to the first day of their orientation session
  • Submit the electronic immunization form (Can be done beginning June 1, 2017)
  • Upload a photo for their Miami student ID, which shortens wait time at the end of orientation
  • Prepare for the orientation advising appointment. This includes reviewing academic information, such as suggested courses for each major during the first year, Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) credit information, and lists of Miami majors and minors, in the New Student Guidebook
  • After June 1, waive Miami's student health insurance (deadline is August 1, 2017), if covered by an alternate plan, such as your family plan. All full-time Oxford campus students must have insurance coverage
Additional information and items that can be reviewed and completed prior to orientation:
  • Students can change their orientation registration, including major and guest details, until one week before the first day of their orientation session
  • Review and complete any missing Financial Aid information on the student's myMiami portal
  • Students can share access to educational records with you through myMiami for Families
  • Follow us on Twitter and request to join our Facebook group, which is a community forum for over 6,000 Miami parents and family members for sharing information, advice, successes, and learning moments
  • Download the Miami University Events app in your Android or Apple app store. This app contains the mobile version of the orientation schedule and will be used for Family Weekend in October (mark your calendars now for October 6-8)!
Completing or reviewing as many of these items as possible will prepare you and your student for a meaningful and smooth orientation session. If you have additional questions, please contact the Office of Orientation & Transition Programs at 513-529-9771 or orientation@MiamiOH.edu.

I look forward to greeting you at the orientation session you attend.

Love and Honor,
Mark W. Pontious
