Responding to the Coronavirus Pandemic as a Caring Community
With the Coronavirus pandemic continuing to affect everyone in Greater Washington, the needs in our community continue to grow. As we welcome another physically distant Shabbat, we have an important opportunity to prioritize connection. This weekend, and over the coming week, consider reaching out to someone you haven’t spoken with in a while—a neighbor, a colleague, a friend, or a relative. Each of us can help ensure that our fellow community members know where they can turn for help if they need it, and where to give back if they’re able. Our shared strength lies in how we care for one another. We have the power to make sure that no one in our community is facing painful moments alone. Wishing you a safe, healthy, and meaningful Shabbat Shalom!

Coming Together in Common Purpose and Effective Action: A Message from Gil Preuss
In order to emerge from this pandemic more effective and responsive to our community’s needs, we need leaders who are thoughtful in their principles, forthcoming with their challenges and ideas, and eager to work in service of the greater whole. I am proud to say that these are the kinds of leaders we have at the helm in Jewish Greater Washington. Agency executives, rabbis, and CEOs of organizations large and small are going out of their way to reach out to one another. They are dissolving traditional boundaries and choosing to stand side by side in the trenches for the good of the broader community.

Meet Local Hero Michal Friedman
As a second-grade general studies teacher at Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School (CESJDS), Michal recognizes that the work she does during this pandemic is vital—for the children and their families. Though school has transitioned to an online environment, it is providing a sense of stability when everything else in her students’ lives seems to have been overturned. Michal is working hard to teach her seven-and eight-year old students over Zoom— unwilling to hit pause on their education.

Lag B'omer with a Twist
In a typical year, Lag B’Omer (the 33rd day of the Omer) is celebrated outdoors with picnics, bonfires, and hiking. It is a fun holiday, a small break during the Omer, the 49-day period of “mini-mourning” that begins on the second day of Passover. On Tuesday, May 12, Federation, PJ Library®, and nine partner organizations came together to transform this year’s Lag B’Omer holiday into Lag B’Online, giving local families a respite from the monotonous routines from seemingly endless days of living with lockdowns, physical distancing, and worrying about the food supply.
