Miami Regionals Appalachian Studies

Miami University Regionals Appalachian Studies is dedicated to exploring Appalachian history, culture, and heritage in the Miami Valley. Appalachian Studies programs are free and open to the public. They host a wide variety of talks, events, and musical performances each semester at Miami Hamilton and Middletown campuses, reflecting the rich cultural and historical legacy of the 20th century Appalachian "Great Migration" which brought many thousands of migrant families to southwestern Ohio in search of economic opportunity following the Second World War.

The Conversation

With J.D. Vance making headlines, Matthew Smith, Director of Public Programs at Miami University Regionals, shares a short piece from The Conversation website about his hometown. He indicates that he tried to focus more on Middletown than on Vance, but included some reflections on teaching Hillbilly Elegy, including one time at the Miami campus of his hometown!

Matthew Smith's blog, The Extraordinary Times, caught up with local bluegrass favorites Vernon and Kitty McIntyre. Their band, The Appalachian Grass, will perform at Miami Hamilton on September 5, 7 p.m., in the Harry T. Wilks Conference Series as part of the Appalachian Studies series at the Regionals (featured above).
