Walsh University was recently commended for its work with first year and transfer students during a 4-week Academy on the First College Year with The John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education.  The intensive online program is designed to engage private and public institutional teams of 3-8 in a collaborative exploration of the foundational aspects of student success in the first year of college. With evidence based and data driven learning, the Walsh team including Dr. Edna McCulloh, Associate Vice President for Academic Administration, Tiffany Kinnard, Dean of Students, and Vanessa Freiman, Director of First-year Student Success and Academic Advising, presented on Walsh’s current programs, conducted an audit and developed a plan to use the Gardner Institutes resources and tools to strengthen its first-year student programs and improve outcomes for all first year students.

Did you know Walsh University has a partnership with our local rape crisis center, COMPASS, that enables us to provide free, confidential, and on-site victim services for both employees and students? On Mondays and Tuesdays from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., in Hannon 205, a COMPASS Victim Advocate is available to serve those who have experienced sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and/or stalking. Each year, Megan Pellegrino, Director of Museum Studies and Director of the Hoover Historical Center, presents Hoover Company history to third grade students in North Canton.  For the second year, the third-grade classes from St. Paul’s Catholic School visited the IBEW Local 1985 Labor Museum where they participated in activities reinforcing the concepts that they learned in the presentations.  The activities were spearheaded by Walsh students in the Honors Program, including Junior Jack Shanor, who worked with Pellegrino to coordinate this effort.  Here’s a video of the children participating in an assembly line activity!

On Monday, New Day Cleveland ran a segment on the “best places to visit this summer.” During the show, they re-broadcast the One Tank Trip episode that they filmed last year at the Hoover Historical Center.
