February is Black History Month! In addition to raising awareness of the month, we want to share resources and encourage you to celebrate with students. The concept of Black History Month was created by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a scholar, activist, author and historian. He has come to be known as the “Father of Black History” for his efforts to insert and elevate the experiences, histories and key contributions of Black peoples in American history. You can read Woodson’s full biography here.
The Racial and Educational Justice Department hopes that during February and beyond, students, families, and staff can learn new things and help us celebrate the lived experiences, cultures, histories, backgrounds, and identities of our Black students and staff in the Northshore School District. We are better together.
If you have any questions, please contact us.
Thank you,
The Racial and Educational Justice Department Northshore School District

Chinese New Year
February 12, Friday, is the Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year. It is the most important holiday in China, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and other Asian countries. Many Asian American families like to celebrate this holiday too. This year Ms Haining, and her students cannot host a Chinese New Year Party at Inglemoor for the community as before. So we have put celebration ideas and resources on Ms. Haining's teacher's website.

From Administration Team:
NC for F and P Grades Information for Northshore Families
To Inglemoor Students and Families,
We hope you all are doing well, and have started the first semester well. This email provides information on NC (instead of F) grading and P grades for students in regards to first semester.
Northshore’s secondary schools have been directed by a team of central office and education association leadership known as the Steering Committee to utilize new practices for grades for S1 during the 2020-21 school year. These practices are intended for credit-bearing courses offered to 6-12 grade students. Students in the middle school taking Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II/Trigonometry, and world language courses are enrolled in credit-bearing courses.
Here are the details: NC for F Grades Guidelines
Any student taking a high school credit-bearing class and whose work over the first semester resulted in an F grade has been given an NC grade on their S1 report card.
For students receiving NC grades, the following steps will be taken:
A meeting between a student taking a year-long course and the teacher will take place prior to mid-winter break (February 12). During this meeting, a contract will be developed for rectifying the NC grade. These meetings will ideally be scheduled during teachers’ scheduled Office Hours. Please look for emails from your student's teacher if your student did not pass a course.
A meeting between a student who took a semester-long course, the previous teacher, and counselor will take place prior to mid-winter break (February 12). During this meeting, a contract will be developed for rectifying the NC grade. These meetings will ideally be scheduled during teachers’ scheduled Office Hours. Please look for emails from your student's teacher if your student did not pass a course.
Students are expected to complete their contract work by the agreed upon date in the contract which is to be no later than the last day of the course.
Contracts may include, but are not limited to the following:
Extensions of time to complete assignments from S1.
Opportunities to demonstrate mastery of a standard or standards from S1.
An award of the S1 grade based on S2 work.
Extended learning projects that incorporate both S1 and S2 concepts.
The above is not an exhaustive list; teachers and students may develop other remedies.
If a student does not demonstrate effort to make up their NC grade by the end of the semester, then the student receives an F.
If a student withdraws from Northshore, the NC will be changed to an F in an effort to provide the student with a broader range of credit retrieval options in their new school system.
If a student moves within Northshore during the second semester, the student’s previous teacher(s) will be contacted for information and the student’s new school will make any necessary adjustments to the original contract.
P Grades Guidelines
Students in high school may opt for a P grade for any A, B, C, or D grade. This process will be applied after the final grading window and is to be initiated by the student.
P grades may affect postsecondary college or university applications. It is important to understand how P grades are viewed by colleges and universities, and how these institutions may act if a P grade is on a high school transcript:
P grade may help GPAs in the short-term, but four-year universities may re-calculate a GPA and include P grades in the calculation.
P grades are typically viewed by college/university enrollment officers as the lowest passing grade (i.e., they are viewed as a D).
P grades default to a D for athletes who wish to play in the NCAA.
P grades may need to be explained to an enrollment officer.
Students who are considering a P grade must take the following steps:
Students will use their school’s P Grade Request Google form to request a P for an A, B, C, or D grade prior to February 5 for seniors, and February 12 for students in grades 9-11. You must contact your school counselor for the link to the P Grade Request Google Form.
Students and their parent/guardian will have a conversation with the school principal (or designee) and counselor about the consequences of taking a P grade by February 11 for seniors, and February 26 for students in grades 9-11.
Students wishing to take a P grade, along with their parent/guardian, must sign a Secondary Mark (Grade) Change form. Doing so will confirm the student’s choice and understanding of the implications on their transcript. The form must be signed by February 11 for seniors, and February 26 for students in grades 9-11.
Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. Thank you all for your grace, understanding, and support as we navigated a challenging semester of online learning. We look forward to working with your students in second semester.
Sincerely
The Inglemoor Administrative Team
Adam Desautels, Erica Hill, Shawn Rainwater and Joe Mismas

Parent Education Resources: Registration
Course Registration information for the 21- 22 school year will be shared with students and families the week after students return from mid-winter break. The Counseling Department will be hosting a series of “Wednesday Webinars” for students. Counselors will review the registration process, graduation requirements and take some time to answer any questions for each grade level. All webinars will be recorded and posted on our counseling webpage. First priority this year will be to meet with our current 9th grade students, then current 11th grade and 10th grade groups. In addition to these sessions, we will be hosting Parent FAQ Fridays and individual information sessions for outside programs. The goal is for the course description guide and electives slide deck to be sent out this Friday (2/12) so students and families can look through them prior to registration opening on 2/22.
To be able to accommodate all Inglemoor students, we are asking that requests for individual counselor meetings regarding graduation plans (for 9th-11th grade students) wait until after everyone has a chance to review the information posted on the webinars and through our counseling website.
Please stay tuned for more updates!

Anchored Families
FREE Parent Education Series for all Inglemoor Parents & Caregivers · 5 online video modules (watch at your convenience) · Twice monthly live coaching zoom calls (optional) Parent Review— “As a parent of multiple teens, I thought that I knew most parenting tricks and tips. However, after learning and practicing “The 5 Must Have Parenting Tools”, our family is much more capable of managing during this stressful and unpredictable time. I have the skills to support my children, and they have learned skills to help themselves. I am so thankful for this parenting series.”
Program for Parents/Caregivers. Anchored Families is founded upon the principles of joy, connection and trauma informed practices. How we show up for ourselves and our kids impacts our ability to experience joy and true connection. Now, more than ever, is the time to deepen adult well-being and confidence by focusing on creating trauma-informed environments for families through a holistic approach that includes considerable and sustainable care for the adults. To support parents in doing just that, Cher Anderton, MSW, LSWAIC has created an innovative online course composed of five asynchronous modules accessible any time throughout the subscription year, a workbook and twice monthly live online coaching where parents can dive deeper into implementation and practice of the 5 Must Have Tools In Your Parenting Toolbox. By intentionally practicing these tools, we can learn to model the very skills we want our kids to emulate. The course was created using concepts from evidence-based practices such as Positive Discipline (a parenting approach that is culturally responsive and mutually respectful of kids and adults) and social and emotional learning competencies from The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL). Please see this flyer for more detailed information. We are bringing this program to our parent/caregiver community because of expressed need for Parent Education during remote learning. This program was created because many of you expressed that you want to connect with other parents and they are open to trying new programs. We realize parents and caregivers are now taking on more roles in the household, and we want to help you develop some new ways to structure your home environment so that everyone in the household feels as fulfilled and successful as possible. This course will give everyone an opportunity to learn new tools that can be introduced into the home that create a better home and remote learning environment for your teen. Participation in this program is free of cost, and all parents/caregivers can join by clicking the link and coupon code on the flyer. You can complete the course at your own pace now through the end of the current school year. It is just for Inglemoor families. Thank you!

Suicide Prevention Training for Parents/Caregivers.
We are proud to announce that Inglemoor High School and North Creek High School are partnering with the Forefront in Schools foundation (UW) to bring a suicide prevention program to our families. North Creek has invited IHS families to their session next Thursday evening. IHS will lead a session later in the year and will be extending an invitation to NCHS families. Below is the information about the event. Thank you to North Creek High School for inviting our families to access this resource!
Please join us on Thursday, February 11th from 7:00-8:30, fill out the registration link below to attend. Suicide Prevention Training Registration: Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 14-24 in Washington and the United States. Many suicides are preventable! Mental health problems among young adults are more common than many families realize. Parents and family members sometimes struggle to understand their student’s mental health concerns—or even to recognize that their student is in distress. Learning that their student is having suicidal thoughts can create extreme stress for the family. This training provides resources to help parents and families support those who are struggling with their mental wellness. For more information, please contact NCHS school counselor Heatherjoy Boi at hboi@nsd.org or Samantha Gutheil at sgutheil@nsd.org

Attendance Updates:
Because of the importance of student attendance, Inglemoor will now be notifying parents/guardians of daily absences using our Robo Call system. If your child is going to be absent, please email the attendance office prior to the absence or no later than 48 hours after the absence.
If your child engages asynchronously, the Robo Call will be a reminder that your student has work to complete and after completing the work, they should email the teacher confirming that the assignment was completed asynchronously.
Wednesdays are still school days. Even though there are no live sessions for students, they are expected to work asynchronously on homework or other assignments. Teachers still take attendance on Wednesdays, and the only way a student can be marked absent is if they miss their scheduled office hours meeting with a teacher. If you receive a robo call about your student on Wednesday evening, it is due to them missing this scheduled office hour meeting.
Just a friendly reminder that Parents/Guardians need to excuse their student's absences within 72 hours (this has just been changed from 48 hours) of the absence occurring. To excuse, please call 425-408-7210 or email ihsattendance@nsd.org or pkartchner@nsd.org with your students first and last name, ID # and what periods/days they will be missing so our attendance secretary can correctly code it. Thank you!
Also, Teachers can mark students absent if they are not participating and there is a blank screen. Please email if you have any questions regarding this process. Thank you for your continued support through these unprecedented times.

Senior Section:
Parents of Seniors:
The High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP) graduation requirement was officially due on Jan. 24th. With all the difficulties that COVID has brought on there are still several students who have not completed this requirement. The senior "not on track for graduation" letters will be coming out soon and we don't want you to be surprised if you receive a letter for the HSBP. Here's what you need to know:
Don't panic! There is plenty of time to get this done and we have never had a senior not graduate due to not completing the HSBP.
One reason for this is that we can call them in to the College and Career Center and have them complete it when we are at school. Since we cannot count on that happening, we would love your support in assuring they get it completed ASAP so we can get it marked off on their transcript.
For most students, completing the HSBP should only take about 15-30 minutes. If a student hasn't completed any of the tasks it will take more time to complete.
I have sent an email to all seniors letting them know they can drop in on my Zoom room any Wednesday between 10-11:30 if they need support. And they can always reach out by email to set something up.
Thank you so much for you support!
Sincerely, Jim Allen

News From the School Nurse:
Changes in Immunization Requirements:
Starting August 1, 2020, all immunization records turned in to schools or childcare centers are required by state law to be medically verified. This means immunization records turned in to the school must be from a health care provider, or you must attach paperwork from a health care provider to your handwritten form that shows your child’s records are accurate. In addition, a complete immunization history is required prior to school attendance – there is no longer a 30-day grace period to submit missing vaccination dates.
Only health care provider verified vaccination records are accepted; we can no longer accept parent reported vaccination dates.
We can no longer grant a 30-day grace period to assemble missing records.
Parents and guardians of students whose records are out of compliance will be notified by the school nurse. Please follow up with your health care provider and submit updated records by email or fax (contact info below).
Please know that students will be unable to receive in-person instruction until their required immunizations are completed and appropriate documentation is submitted.
If your child already meets immunization requirements and has records on file with the school, you do not need to do anything. If you aren’t sure, compliance can be checked online or by checking with your health care provider.
If you have further questions or concerns, please contact the Inglemoor High School Nurses.

Jessica Parrott (Works with students with the last name starting with Sc-Z)
From Our Mental Health Counselor Caleb Visser:
I am expecting January and February to be difficult months for students and for parents. One of my main concerns as a clinician who cares for teens is to open compassionate spaces. Internally in the form of more generous and caring self-talk, also externally, in relationships between friends and family members.
Nearly all of us are more agitated and anxious at baseline than we've been previously (I include myself here), and that can hurt our capacity for empathy and understanding. I made some videos over break, and my aim is to help teenagers and parents understand more about why this year is so hard on students. I use knowledge mostly compiled from Daniel Siegel's wonderful book "Brainstorm", which is helpful both for its scientific rigor and its accessibility.
Here's a link to the first of a series of four videos on the ESSENCE of adolescence, from this link, you should be able to find the other three I published at the beginning of January. I hope this helps a little, and I hope we all find extra compassion for our teenagers and ourselves. I care about you all! We'll make it through this together.
I've recently been reading Dr. Lisa Damour, a psychologist who has authored two brilliant books about the stressed facing teenage girls. Under Pressure and Untangled are both highly recommended and very affordable. I recently stumbled on her podcast for parents, and an extraordinarily helpful episode released last week, where she chats about navigating the challenges of online education with teenagers. If you've not heard of Damour, I think you will find her very practical and helpful. You can check out the episode here: and subscribe to her podcast "Ask Lisa: The Psychology and Parenting".
InvestEd Fund:
If you or anyone you know would like to consider donating to our InvestEd Fund, we can assure you that all money goes directly into the school's account, which is managed by the counseling department. InvestEd has very defined standards for how they allow us to use the money, but it always goes to individual students to support their basic needs or engagement with school. The best part about this fund is that it does not require any student to jump through hoops or fill out paperwork, it is simply a request that goes through the counseling department and we take care of it from there.
So far this year, we have used the money to support families with utility bills, warm winter clothing, groceries, and most recently, tutoring supports for our most at-risk students. If you would like to know more, you can read information about the program on their website. Families that are interested in having their money go to Inglemoor students directly can currently send a check to our bookkeeper, with a note that they would like the funds to be distributed in our InvestEd account. There are no fees associated with the account and our bookkeeper, Lesley Clawson is always sure to get the funding to us ASAP. Feel free to connect with her directly.

From the ASB:
Did your student have a class fee or an ASB club fee during first Semester? To see if your student has an outstanding fee, please take a moment to log into your family's TouchBase account. To access your account online, you need an official parent TouchBase login (this is different from ParentVue). Email Mrs. Clawson to obtain your family's username and password.
A fee that has not been paid or cleared does become a fine--there is no late fee added, but any fines that are still unpaid at the end of the school year will limit your student's ability to receive a yearbook or transcript copies for colleges. Financial assistance is available. Please contact your guidance counselor if you need help covering the cost of your fees. If you have any questions about your account, please contact Mrs. Clawson or your counselor who are happy to help.
Seniors
Seniors, are you interested in joining a IHS seniors only Minecraft world? Check your student email for information on how you can join the IHS seniors Minecraft server. If you have any questions please reach out to Mrs. Kowalski (ekowalski@nsd.org)
ASB Cards Many students and families have reached out to us about purchasing ASB cards. Currently, ASB cards can only be purchased for students who are involved in a club that is attending conferences or competing. ASB card fees will be assessed to individual student accounts as the club member names are provided to us from the advisors. This year, cards will be broken up into semester 1 and semester 2. Each semester will have a $30 ASB card. This means that if a club or activity only competes during one semester the student will only be charged $30 for the semester that their club or activity is competing in. This formula will also be applied to sports when they begin as well.
As we enter different stages in the Northshore Learning Model Status, ASB cards may be available for purchase by all students. We will continue to update you as we enter new stages.
Clubs and Common Interest Groups: Club & Common Interest Group meetings are starting! All Vikings are encouraged and welcome to join any of our 40+ student organizations. Here is the full list of IHS student organizations meeting times & days: 2020-2021 Club Info. Students, don't worry if you missed any information sessions, you can watch Club Information Session Recordings by signing in with your student email and contact advisors with questions.
You are also welcome to form your own club or Common Interest Group! Just follow the steps outlined on the ASB Website.
For any questions around ASB cards, activities or clubs please contact Elisabeth Kowalski.

Thank You and Celebrations:
Way to go DECA:
Earlier this month, 88 IHS DECA students competed at the Area 3 Virtual DECA Conference. We had 65 members qualify for the Virtual State Conference in March! We had 4 students take 1st Place, 6 students placed 2nd and 9 students placed 3rd.
Winners were announced on January 15th at our Virtual Awards Session:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0F3OSy0JNU&ab_channel=JillZawatski
The winners for the DECA Stock Market Game were announced. Over 1,800 teams competed in the Western Region, and the top 25 teams in the region qualified to compete at the Virtual International Career and Development Conference. I'm excited to announce that we had TWO teams qualify! Congratulations to our Stock Market game winners Abhinav Akkiraju and Helen Shen!! These 9th grade students will present their papers at ICDC in March. This was a new conference format in a very unorthodox school year. I'm so proud of how hard our students worked to prepare for this conference.
Congrats to all our IHS DECA competitors!
Bravo IHS Music! A big congratulations to the following outstanding Inglemoor Instrumental musicians have been accepted into the All-Northwest and All-State groups for 2021. They all prepared and recorded a very difficult audition back in December and we just received the notice of who "made it". In a normal year, these students would go to the Convention for several days and be able to perform with the very best musicians from five Northwest states. This year, they will be recognized on the WMEA web site and receive a certificate.
