Hi Neighbor!
Have you read Middle Schooled? Andy Mullen, a guidance counselor in TE district, has compiled ‘a best of’ weekly emails he’s sent to parents through the years.  His writing is funny, poignant, relevant and relatable, and his gem of a book is organized by the school calendar—September through June—so it’s an easy reference grab when you need it.  Yes, I’m a mom of two middle schoolers, but Andy’s suggestions are universally helpful for any caring parent/grandparent/human.

In his opening section, Family Time, Andy remembers a dad who, at the time of his daughter’s graduation, is overcome with sadness, saying, “I missed it.  I missed all of it.”

This struck me.  Not because I think I’m missing all of it, which is a relief.  But to crush it with a cliché here, these years do fly by.  They really move.  I sometimes worry that I haven’t done enough with my daughters.  They’re taller than I am, now, and I still haven’t shown them . . . everything!

Another school year is soon to end, and we will create the Family Summer Bucket List.  I’ll tell you, good intentions abound in June, and then, as it happens, there’s a strong possibility that I’ll be rummaging the recycling in September; I’ll come across the unchecked list and will then wallow in parental failure.

But for now, we take the time to at least imagine all that we can do together.  We may not hit everything on the list, but for now, it’s NOW.
Trying not to miss it,
Katie L

Helpful tips supplied by Mike Williams, Division VP, D&B Elite Construction Group, King of Prussia

Top 3 things to consider when selecting a contractor to renovate your space:

Do your research.  When shopping for a contractor ask to see their portfolio.  It is important that you like their work and trust their capability to bring your home renovation dreams to fruition.  Do they have experience in projects of your size?  If you are considering a larger scale renovation, it is advised to choose a design build firm who is capable of handling project aspects from A-Z so that you don’t have to.  Have they won any awards that can speak to the quality of their work?   You can also search for reviews of former customers to see what they say about them.  Word of mouth is a great referral source!

Don’t focus solely on the price when it comes to your “Dream Kitchen”.  While it is advised to have an idea in mind of what you are willing to spend on a project, it should not be the only consideration.  Communication is key!  You should feel comfortable and confident in your selection.  How responsive are they in getting back to you in answering questions?   Do they listen to what you have to say?  Ask about their process.

Make sure everything is provided to you in writing.  Once you have met face to face and decided on which GC to use, make sure that everything is outlined in writing.  Doing this will eliminate ambiguity throughout the process and ensure that expectations are being met based on the preset guidelines.
