AI Center for Civic and Social Good Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting - On March 3, 2026, the AI Center held a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony (read this news story about the opening); the event also featured faculty/student and community demos of AI being used for social good. Beginning April 6, the AI Center will host drop-in consult hours for introductory AI literacy and tech support for the SJSU and SJ communities; the AI Center will also be available for reservations related to AI or Digital Literacy events, workshops, programs, etc. There are 30 laptops available (specifically designed for AI-intensive workloads and 3D rendering) in the space for individual users during drop-in hours or for use by a class or workshop. Release of the 2026 Silicon Valley Index - On February 27, SJSU hosted the Joint Venture Silicon Valley State of the Valley report, which shared data about the economic, workforce, and social conditions in our region. While not directly tied to AI, the data can be used to understand key challenges and opportunities, which can inform research directions and curricular opportunities. The updated index provides more than 150 indicators charting Silicon Valley’s people, economy, society, place, and governance. 2026 Index; Interactive Website; Press Release

AI+Cybersecurity Faculty Development Summer Institute in Washington DC | Schedule, Eligibility, & Application Process | Applications due March 14th. The George Washington University and the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa are jointly hosting an NSF-funded six-week-long AI+Cybersecurity Faculty Development Summer Institute in Washington DC. This program is designed to help educators integrate AI concepts into their existing cybersecurity curricula. Faculty teaching cybersecurity courses who wish to modernize their coursework with AI/ML components.

This session will feature Dr. Sayma Akther, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at SJSU, who will lead the discussion of her paper titled "Visualization-driven AI Ensuring Quality in Wearable Time-Series Sensor Data for Healthcare." Dr. Akther is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at San José State University. Her research focuses on AI, machine learning, and wearable sensor technology for healthcare applications. Participation is open to all SJSU faculty and students, but registration is required. This event, jointly hosted by SJSU and the City of San Jose as a Center for Civic and Social Good program, will feature a panel discussion with Amanda Renteria (CEO, Code for America); Sheryl Ehrman (SJSU, Dean, Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering); and Lili Gangas (Kapor Center, Chief Technology Community Officer). Sandy Hirsh (SJSU, Special Assistant to the Provost for AI Initiatives) will moderate the panel. The panel will be followed by tabletop discussions and an opportunity to network. Register to attend.
