Hi Class of 2030! I hope you’re all having a fantastic first semester at Tulane! My name is Carys Kasprzycki, and I’m a Marketing and Communications intern within Newcomb-Tulane College. I’m a senior double majoring in Psychology and Cognitive Studies with a minor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. I’m writing this message to share everything you need to know about midterms from a student perspective, as someone who has now had many semesters of exams under my belt.
If you’re looking at your midterm grades and feeling stressed, disappointed, or unsure what they mean, take a deep breath. I’ve been there, and I promise that one midterm grade does not define your entire semester or, more importantly, you.

Midterm grades are really just a snapshot of where you are right now. They can show you what’s going well, what might need a little more attention, and where you may want to change your approach for the rest of the semester.
If you’re happy with your grades, celebrate that! Be proud of your hard work! And if you’re not happy with where you stand, try not to panic. There is still plenty of time left in the semester. Look at what’s bringing your grade down and ask yourself what you can realistically change. Maybe that means going to office hours, finding a study group, stopping by the Academic Learning and Tutoring Center, changing how you study for exams, or being more intentional about keeping up with assignments.
One of the biggest things I’ve learned in college is that asking for help early is not a sign that you’re struggling. Instead, it’s a sign that you care about your success. Your professors, advisors, and classmates are all resources you can use.
Most importantly, don’t let one number convince you that you’re not capable. College is a learning process, and sometimes figuring out what doesn’t work for you is just as valuable as getting the grade you wanted. Use your midterm grades as a chance to check in, make a plan, and keep moving forward. You have more time, more opportunities, and more control over the rest of your semester than you might think.
