Fast start lifts Independence in region opener against Centennial

By Charles Pulliam • Multimedia Reporter
THOMPSON’S STATION – Watching film all week leading up to their Region 7-6A opener Friday, Independence seniors River Katina and Jack Rummell had one goal in mind for the opening kickoff: take it to the house.
“Whoever gets it, first kick we are going to the house,” said Katina.
Rummell got it. And he went 98 yards as the Eagles found the offensive spark immediately in a 35-0 shutout of upstart Centennial.

Summit reminisces on youthful meeting, sends Bruins to 0-3 start

By Joe Williams • Sports Writer
BRENTWOOD – There were many stories being watched during the Summit High School football team's 27-14 win over Brentwood at James C. Parker Stadium Friday night.
The Spartans, last year’s 5A state champions, rolled into Class 6A with a win over the defending state 6A runners-up. The Bruins opened up 0-3 for the first time since 2014 with a third straight gut-wrenching loss. There were the uncharacteristic six Brentwood turnovers. And Summit’s failure to capitalize on most of those miscues.

CPA overcomes BGA in rugged region opener

By David Dawson • Sports Writer
NASHVILLE — The Christ Presbyterian Academy football team’s record is still perfect, even if their latest performance wasn’t.
The defending Division II-AA state champions moved to 3-0 on the season by persevering through a number of uncharacteristic mistakes during a 23-6 victory over Battle Ground Academy on Friday night in the Middle Region opener for both teams.
“We played terrible, just plain and simple,” said CPA senior linebacker Langston Patterson.

Ravenwood rolls on new field past Franklin

By Doug Dyer • Sports Writer
BRENTWOOD – Ravenwood christened its new turf field with a huge win Friday night, and the Raptors made it look easy against the Franklin Admirals in a 46-10 victory.
“I’m proud of the guys and the effort they gave,” Raptor coach Will Hester said. “We just caught (Franklin) at the right time.”
Hester’s team rolled up nearly 500 yards of offense and Raptor quarterback Chris Parson accounted for three of his team’s scores, two passing and one rushing. Parson finished with 275 total yards from scrimmage, and was 9-of-14 passing in the Region 7-6A opener for both teams.

Fairview overcomes early misuses in turf debut at home against Stewart County

Herald Sports
FAIRVIEW – Chris Hughes had one of those head-scratching starts Friday in Fairview High School’s first football game on their finally-completed glistening turf field.
His football team moved the ball with ease, but fell behind 14-0 early. A blocked field goal was returned for a touchdown and three first-half turnovers were the difference as Stewart County, the same team that snapped the Yellow Jackets streak of Region 6-3A titles last season, had the upper hand early.
“To say the first half was sloppy at best is an understatement,” Hughes said. “We ended up giving up more points on offense and special teams than we did on defense."

Schools provide updated COVID-19 data
WCS reports 448 active cases Friday, FSSD counts 107 for the week

By Tori Keafer • Associate Editor
Williamson County Schools and the Franklin Special School District reported updated COVID-19 data on Friday, and WCS showed a decrease in active cases districtwide.
WCS reported that, as of Friday, the district had 350 students and 98 staff members in isolation with a confirmed positive COVID-19 case. This is down from 426 students and 105 staff members on Tuesday and further down from 544 students and 105 staff members on Aug. 27. The district reports these numbers on its website twice weekly.
The Franklin Special School District reports its numbers a little differently. Every Friday, the district sends out a weekly report, which includes all cases from that week, including active and inactive cases. Since Monday, the district recorded a total of 96 students and 11 staff members with a positive case. An additional 308 and five staff members were listed as “exclusions” from school this week.

Health leaders stress shots, masks as outbreak surges

Associated Press
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — As hospitalizations, deaths and COVID-19 case numbers continue to climb in Tennessee, health experts on Friday pleaded with the public to get vaccinated and continue to wear a mask.
In a letter distributed by the Tennessee Hospital Association, a group of chief officers and chief nursing officers stressed that the latest surge of the virus outbreak is taking a deep toll on the state's frontline workers and wreaking havoc on families who have lost loved ones to the virus.
"We grieve for family members as we watch them say their final good-byes," the letter stated. "We also are frustrated that the simple steps that could greatly reduce the loss of life are not being taken by all Tennesseans."
