Strengthening global partnerships: Professor Amira Roess collaborates with international researchers to strengthen pathogen discovery |
The importance of understanding and preventing the transmission of pathogens relies on global cooperation and necessitates collaborative efforts among researchers. In January, UK and Bangladesh researchers visited Mason to share knowledge about and explore the complex transmission of animal-born infectious diseases.

| Nursing team earns Mini-Teaching Grant |
Congratulations to Yanika Kowitlawakul (PI), Amanda Brooks, Esther Park, James De Marco, and Terri Ann Guingab on earning a 2024 Mini Grant, sponsored by the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning. The grant provides support and opportunities for faculty to improve curriculum design, teaching strategies, and pedagogical resources supporting anti-racist and inclusive teaching.
They will use Peer-Led Team Learning, active learning, and teaching methods involving small group interactions among students, in NURS 491 Clinical Reasoning and Test Taking Analysis for Spring 2024. The goal is to provide academic support to the diverse student population and foster leadership skills among participants.

Canvas Migration – CPH Representation |
George Mason University is moving its Learning Management System (LMS) from Blackboard Learn to Canvas by Fall 2025. The following faculty will be representing the College in the phased roll out:
Dean Melissa Perry (executive committee), Assistant Professor Philip Zane (advisory committee), and Associate Professor Lila Fleming and Assistant Professor
Alison Miner (faculty mentors). In addition, Instructional Designers Terri Ann Guingab and Barbara Helmick will support faculty through this transition.
The Executive Committee will provide university-wide perspective to implementing the new LMS across the institution to streamline university processes and improve student/faculty experience and success. The Advisory Committee will be charged with assisting in determining university needs for LMS implementation and communication with and receiving feedback from our college. Faculty Mentors will pilot courses in the summer or fall with support from the Stearns Center, and will guide faculty development as Canvas becomes available university-wide, providing information and advice to colleagues across the university.

Early Career Investigators: The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities is hosting the 2024 Health Disparities Research Institute (HDRI) on August 5 - 9. This weeklong program offers a unique opportunity to learn about current disparities research, connect with experts, and gain insight into the grant review process. Apply between February 5 and March 11. More information on eligibility and how to apply available here.
Good news. Mason is now an institutional member of PLOS which means faculty pay reduced or no publication fees through December 2025. The participating journals are: PLOS ONE, PLOS Digital Health, PLOS Complex Systems, PLOS Computational Biology, PLOS Genetics, PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, PLOS Pathogens. Mason also has an agreement with Wiley (view details here). In addition, some journals offer discounts to reviewers.

On January 29, the Office of Student Affairs enjoyed a pizza lunch as their reward for being the CPH winning unit in the Steps Challenge of last Fall semester. As a demonstration of their win, Cathy Tompkins presented OSA representatives with the CPH Steps Challenge trophy. OSA will hold the trophy throughout this spring as all CPH walkers compete to bring it home to their own unit at the end of another semester of walking.
This past reporting week, Michelle Williams had the highest number of steps for an individual and OSA for a unit. Report your steps each Monday by noon. Report your steps each Monday by noon.

Faculty Peer Support Sessions |
Alternating Mondays at 4 pm and Thursdays at 8 am | Zoom
Join your faculty colleagues and an associate dean each week for the faculty peer support sessions. The objective of the sessions is to increase connection among faculty and provide a sense of community.
Feel free to attend once or every week. We are open to all suggestions on tweaking the sessions along the way. The sessions are opened to all CPH full-time and adjunct faculty. You will receive a calendar invite and Zoom link for all the sessions. Please contact Cathy Tompkins with any questions.
