Bridges and LINC Hold “Kick Off to Kindergarten” Event

United Way of the Capital Region’s Bridges Society and LINC (Lead. Impact. Network. Change.) group joined forces on August 15 at Appalachian Harley Davidson to assemble educational tool kits and “Welcome to Kindergarten” signs. The kits and signs were given to children in United Way’s Ready for School, Ready to Succeed community pilot project.

More than 40 Bridges and LINC members assembled approximately 1,000 educational tool kits which included items such as glue sticks, crayons, dice and books written in both English and Spanish.

The Ready for School, Ready to Succeed pilot project prepares children academically and socially for kindergarten. Kick Off to Kindergarten is one of many events that provide Bridges members an opportunity to have a direct impact on the children in the program.

Volunteers Needed to Help Working Families with Tax Preparation

Volunteers are needed to offer free tax preparation to help working families receive the federal and state tax credits they are eligible for.

The service is offered through the Money in Your Pocket (MIYP) program, a community partnership led by United Way of the Capital Region that is committed to the economic stability of local families. In tax year 2018, 272 volunteers filed 4,691 tax returns, resulting in more than $4.6 million returned to local families. The average annual income for clients receiving tax preparation services was $21,100, which helped increase their household income by an average of 6 percent.

No previous experience is required and training is provided. Volunteers are also needed to serve as greeters (no tax preparing required for this position). Scheduling is flexible with daytime, evening and Saturday opportunities available from January through April 2020.

The Money in Your Pocket campaign is supported by the PNC Foundation and the U.S. Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service.

For those interested in learning more, several informational sessions will be held in November. To see a list of dates or to sign up, visit http://uwcr.partnershipplanners.org/openhouse.
