Student Spotlight Elizabeth Grout '19
Loves About Brebeuf I love all of the opportunities Brebeuf has to offer. My freshman year, I participated in three different sports and joined a variety of clubs in an attempt to experience every aspect of Brebeuf. Even as a senior, I am discovering different niches of Brebeuf every day. And if you think you can add to the experience of Brebeuf, you can start your own club or create your own intramural team. My friend and I even started Knitting Club to make hats and scarves for the homeless population of Indianapolis, and the turnout has been great. Class You Are Most Looking Forward to This Year All of them! Namely, AP Macro with Mr. Tague and French 4 with Mme. Martin. Mr. Tague and Mme. Martin are two of my favorite teachers ever, so I am happy to spend my last year at Brebeuf with them. Also, Mme. Martin regularly makes brownies for the class, so that’s a plus. Future Plans As of now, I hope to attend Marquette University and major in either marketing or international business and minor in political science. I also plan on having two kids, rescuing two dogs, and retiring to Hawaii by age 40. Teams & Co-Curriculars Swim Team Captain

Pottery By You employee Random Facts I’ve been stepped on by a camel. I buy the majority of my clothes from thrift shops. I’ve met Guy Fieri. My choice of music is anything Fergie. Where would you travel if time and money weren’t an issue? I would travel to New Zealand. I love being in the mountains, and I also love going to the beach, so New Zealand seems like the best of both worlds in that aspect. Also, I have never been out of the country, so I would hope to travel as far away as possible. What are some small things that make your day better? I am a morning person, so my favorite thing to do is wake up, make a cup of coffee (Fresh Thyme’s Kona coffee), and make myself some pancakes. I also love high-fives. The world would be a happier place if more people gave high-fives. How did you spend your summer? I spent my summer working. I love being busy, and this summer I had four jobs. I was a swim coach for my neighborhood swim team, taught private swim lessons, was the manager/head lifeguard of my neighborhood pool, and worked at Pottery By You. I love working and I am already saving for my first apartment, so this summer was very productive. What are you most looking forward to during this school year? I am most looking forward to swim season. I have gotten very close with my teammates these past three years, and they feel like family now. I always feel the most at home during swim season, so I am eager to get back in the pool. It is also tradition that we wear Crocs to school every meet day, so I can’t wait to break out my Crocs again.

Ignatian Scholars Updates
Ignatian Scholars Retreat On Tuesday, August 7, the Freshmen Ignatian Scholars went to Butler University for their annual retreat. Once there, the new Scholars began their jam-packed day with a welcome and introduction to the program and what they can expect from it by Winston Miller, the Ignatian Scholars Coordinator. After learning the story of Saint Ignatius, the Scholars were led through an activity facilitated by Brebeuf Principal, Mr. VanSlambrook, who asked the scholars to walk around the room and read various quotes regarding leadership he had posted on the walls and to stand next to their favorite quote. Scholars were asked to volunteer their thoughts and articulate what they found meaningful about their leadership quote. Immediately afterwards, Scholars listened to a current Butler student who spoke about the importance of getting involved at a new school by joining clubs and organizations. In an effort to become more familiar with each other, Scholars then broke out into small groups and played icebreaker games where they learned interesting facts about each other that they had to memorize. At that point, the rest of the college counseling team from Brebeuf, led by Director of College Counseling, Dr. Jim Fadely, arrived and introduced themselves and made it clear they were available to answer any college-related questions the scholars may have at any time throughout their time at Brebeuf. From there, the Ignatian Scholars received a tour of Butler’s campus by two current Butler tour guides and had lunch in Butler’s main dining hall. The day concluded with another talk by Ignatian Scholars Coordinator, Winston Miller, who discussed the importance of stepping out of one’s comfort zone. It was a fun and productive day, and we want to thank Butler’s Admissions office for so graciously hosting the Ignatian Scholars for the day! Ignatian Scholars Reception Ignatian Scholars, along with their families, are invited to the first ever Ignatian Scholars Reception on Monday, August 13, 2018. Light hors d'oeuvres will be served. Speakers will include Brebeuf Jesuit Principal Greg VanSlambrook, Director of College Counseling, Dr. Jim Fadely and Ignatian Scholars Coordinator, Winston Miller.
