When an energy event related to high power demand on the electricity supply is anticipated, a Flex Alert notification can be issued for the following day for peak power use hours of 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. when the grid will be most stressed. Consumers are urged to conserve power by setting thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, if health permits, avoiding major appliance use, turning off unnecessary lights and avoiding electric vehicle charging.
UC San Diego hosts over 350 EV charging stations. If an energy event occurs where regional power supply may be challenged, we must do our part to reduce demand and prioritize core campus operations and regional grid stability. UC San Diego does not turn off or throttle EV chargers during Flex Alerts to avoid impacting individual mobility; however, premium prices will apply. Please charge before or after a Flex Alert to save and do your part to conserve when it counts the most—this includes both campus and home charging.
We encourage EV drivers to sign up for Flex Alert notices.
