Highlander HOPE offers resources for students struggling with addiction
As the spring semester moves toward finals season, depression and anxiety rates among students on college campuses creep higher. In a 2022 survey on stress in college, the American Addiction Center found that exams were the biggest stressor among respondents. Increased stress, in turn, can adversely affect students’ sleeping and eating habits and sometimes trigger unhealthy addictive behaviors as a means of coping with or managing unpleasant feelings.

Highlander HOPE (Healing. Outreach. Prevention. Empowerment.) is a valuable resource for Radford University students struggling with their own addictions or those of family members, as well as for their allies (faculty and staff). Housed within Radford University’s Office of Substance and Violence Education Support Services (SAVES), Highlander HOPE offers a safe and supportive community that empowers students to explore their path toward recovery through a range of resources, including personal consultations with certified peers, one-on-one counseling with our licensed counselors and peer-led recovery support groups offered Wednesdays and Fridays from 2-3 p.m. in the Recovery Lounge in Heth Hall 243. The Recovery Lounge is accessible to students participating in Highlander HOPE programming any time Heth Hall is open.

Bleeding control training classes |
It is imperative to recognize the significance of such training, particularly in emergency situations where prompt action can make a life-saving difference. Bleeding control training empowers participants to assess and manage severe bleeding until professional medical assistance arrives, potentially saving lives in critical moments.
As part of Radford University’s commitment to campus safety, individual bleeding control kits are now accessible throughout campus within the automated external defibrillator (AED) cabinets. Cabinets containing these kits will be easily identifiable by a distinctive sticker affixed to them.
All members of the campus community are encouraged to take advantage of these training opportunities and familiarize themselves with the bleeding control kits. Together, we can enhance our preparedness and resilience in the face of emergencies.
You can register for upcoming bleeding control training classes using the button below. Course offerings and registration are limited. Additional offerings will be scheduled should current courses fill up.
For questions about the Stop the Bleed program, please reach out to the Office of Emergency Management at oem@radford.edu.

Electronic undergraduate academic petition |
The Radford University Highlander Success Center has launched the new electronic undergraduate electronic academic petition campus-wide.
The petition form is the first to be transformed from a paper process to an automated electronic format using the Kuali Build program. This software is being used to help automate manual processes and streamline form routing and approvals across the university.
Accessible through OneCampus, the electronic undergraduate academic petition will be used exclusively beginning Monday, April 15, replacing the paper form and e-mail template. You can search “Academic Petition” in OneCampus and click on the Undergraduate Academic Petition tile. Instructions on generating and reviewing petitions are available on OneCampus and on the IT Knowledge Base website. For technical issues with submitting the petition, contact IT at 540-831-7500.
The process flow for the academic petition request is as follows:
-
An academic petition form is created in Kuali Build and is submitted on behalf of the student. This is typically done by a professional advisor or department chair/designee.
-
Reviewers will receive an e-mail with “Review Needed” in the subject. The e-mail will contain a “Begin Review” button. Once clicked, reviewers will be prompted to log in with their Radford University credentials via single sign-on to Kuali. (Reviewers may include an HSC coordinator, instructor and/or department chair and must always include an academic dean or designee.)
*No petition will be processed by the Office of the Registrar without an academic dean or designee review.
- Once reviewed, the petition will automatically be forwarded to the next reviewer and finally to the Office of the Registrar for processing. The petition originator, reviewers and student will be notified when the petition has been processed.
The Highlander Success Center is happy to provide departmental or individual training on using the new petition.
