2024 Commencement Awards Celebrate Education Innovators
Amidst the celebrations of our 5784/2024 Commencement and Ordination, Hebrew College will honor two leaders who are shaping the future of Jewish education.
Rabbi David Gedzelman, President & CEO of The Steinhardt Foundation for Jewish Life, will receive the Hillson/Bronstein Award for Promotion of Hebrew Language and Literature for his dedication to revitalizing Jewish identity through innovative educational and cultural initiatives. David has played a leading role in the Foundation's efforts to develop a network of Hebrew language charter schools and immersion programs.
This year’s Benjamin Shevach Award for Excellence in Jewish Educational Leadership will be given to Joni Blinderman, Executive Director of the Covenant Foundation. Her work focuses on family education and engagement, climate and climate anxiety in youth, the relationship between text and creativity, the arts, and the social-emotional health and wellbeing of educators.
Join us in honoring David and Joni for their innovative work alongside our graduates and ordinees on June 2!

Teen Beit Midrash Sends Team to Moot Beit Din
Hebrew College’s Teen Beit Midrash program sent a team of three to participate last month in the 2024 Maimonides Moot Court High School Competition. The teens participation was generously made possible through a gift from Harvey and Marsha Chasen. "It was incredibly inspiring to work with Teen Beit Midrash’s Moot Beit Din team and witness their argument in the competition," says Moot Beit Din advisor and HC rabbinical student Talia Young. "Our team spent two months learning the sources and developing their case. They traveled to New York to attend a Shabbaton with over 200 teens, and present their argument at the competition in front of a panel of judges, which included esteemed rabbis and a federal judge."

In my opinion, it is not the clothing that is sacred. Rather, the act of dressing the other, the love and familiarity and care, that is where the holiness lies. In my own life, we are beyond the days of helping little ones into clothing, but perhaps in the sacred work of reaching out to others, we can extend our circles of care and compassion. The Torah arrives at this moment to assert that in life and in death, each human being has the holiness of the high priest: the garb is just a reminder of the sacred spark within.

Celebration of Adult Learning
Last night, adult learners gathered at Hebrew College for a "Celebration of Adult Learning." Special recognition was bestowed on learners who reached the milestone of attending at least 18 courses by inducting them into our Chai Society, as well as those who have completed 100 hours of learning through Hebrew College's Me’ah Classic program, and new learners who attended a class for the first time this year. During the celebration, Hebrew College Vice President and faculty member Dr. Susie Tanchel offered a teaching and several adult learners shared reflections.
