Happy May UC San Diego Staff!
I hope you are all having a great spring quarter so far! As we continue through a busy time on campus and the countdown to summer begins, I encourage everyone to take a moment to enjoy the warmer weather, connect with colleagues, and take advantage of the many events and opportunities happening across UC San Diego this month.
We are excited to continue building community through events like Triton Treats: Breakfast Bites on May 21st at Ridgewalk Social. Registration is required for this event, and space is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot to enjoy breakfast burritos, smoothies, and a chance to connect with fellow staff members before the workday begins. Thank you to everyone who has attended our recent Staff Association events this year. We love seeing staff come together and look forward to continuing to create spaces for connection and engagement.
Staff Association elections for the 2026–2028 cycle will also be opening soon! If you are interested in getting more involved with the staff community, serving in a leadership role, or helping plan future initiatives and events, we encourage you to keep an eye out for nomination information later this month.
In this newsletter, you’ll also find campus celebrations recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and Jewish American Heritage Month, along with wellness opportunities through the UC Moves Challenge, volunteer opportunities for All Campus Commencement, professional development resources, and more.
Thank you for all that you do for the UC San Diego community!
Warm Regards,
Maddie Martinez
Chair, UC San Diego Staff Association

A Message from Lawrence Furnstahl, Vice Chancellor Finance and Administration |
Greetings, UC San Diego staff community,
I'm honored to be welcomed into such an extraordinary institution. Since joining UC San Diego in January, I've been impressed by the scope, energy, and ambition of this campus and by the people who make it all work. That's you. I'm glad to be here.
I want to be straightforward with you about where we stand financially, because I believe you deserve candid communication. As I've said publicly: our costs are growing faster than our revenues. Tuition, state appropriations, federal grant funding are all shaped by external political and economic forces. At the same time, cost inflation is high and persistent. Taken together, these pressures require us to make thoughtful choices.
The good news: we are not now facing the catastrophic cuts we feared a year ago as we build the Fiscal Year 2027 budget. But "not catastrophic" is not the same as "easy," and I won't pretend that we can avoid difficult decisions.
My priorities are straightforward:
|
|
|
|
-
Building strong financial foundations — solid accounting, controls, and reporting
- Making smart budget decisions for FY2027 with a clear financial strategy going forward
- Delivering core administrative services on budget
|
Everything my office does is in service to this university's mission. When you connect to campus Wi-Fi, access your employee benefits, or eat at a dining facility, you're experiencing what our teams work hard to provide every day.
I'm a budget analyst by trade, and if I have a special skill, it's distilling complex financial data into the key numbers that matter the most and then explaining them clearly. I intend to bring that same clarity to our community.
I look forward to partnering with the Staff Association and showing up for staff across campus.
Best,
Lawrence Furnstahl
Vice Chancellor Finance and Administration
