Stanford Celebrates Juneteenth |
From June 4 to June 25, 2024, a range of activities showcasing African American food, art, culture and more will be held in person across Stanford venues and virtually.
Juneteenth celebrates the date when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned that they were free. More than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect, and two months after the end of the U.S. Civil War, Texas slaves discovered they were freed on June 19, 1865.
Since then, Juneteenth has been commemorated in communities across America, becoming a federal holiday in 2021. To learn more about the history of Juneteenth, please click here.
