The Gupta Family StartWise Scholarship |
|
|
Sara Milles Gupta, UCSB EAP Denmark ’01, and her husband, Roshan, established their scholarship after her pivotal EAP experience as a first-generation student. Sara credits skills learned while abroad to her career success and felt compelled to help pave the way for others to experience their own profound journeys outside of their comfort zones.

“In an increasingly interconnected world, we believe it’s vital for students to experience different cultures and perspectives. This exposure fosters empathy, global awareness, and the collaboration skills needed to thrive in today’s diverse society. By offering this scholarship and leveraging corporate matching to amplify its reach, we hope to empower first-generation students to gain life-changing experiences that prepare them to lead and contribute on a global scale.”

"As a first-generation, Punjabi-American student, I greatly appreciate the support of this scholarship in enriching my study abroad and research experience at the University of Ghana in Spring 2024. I am confident the Gupta scholarship will continue to inspire future first-generation students with the opportunity to have immersive and life-changing study abroad experiences in India, Africa, or Latin America. I will be pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching — Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at University of Southern California in the fall. This wouldn't have been possible without my time spent studying abroad and the Gupta scholarship which solidified my passion for language education research!”

“During my EAP experience living and learning in Budapest, Hungary, I studied alongside students from a culture that was foreign to me at the time, and I learned that being able to adapt to different cultures, situations, and people is a life skill that goes beyond what you learn in the classroom.

My time in Budapest pushed me out of my comfort zone and fostered my interest in one day living abroad permanently. Today, I live in Copenhagen, Denmark and work at a global accounting firm interacting with clients and colleagues from around the world, all the while enjoying the adventures of living abroad again!”
