Challenging Our Scholars

Independent Study Cultivates Depth and Passion

At SAS, our independent curriculum emphasizes depth over breadth, learning for the sake of learning, and responsiveness to the aspirations of our students and the talents of our faculty. One of the many ways that we turn these principles into opportunities for our students is through Independent Study opportunities. Current and recent independent study projects include Ceramic Analysis at Indian Shelter; Oceanography, Navigation, & Sailing; Senior Theatre; Sports Journalism and Communication; and Analysis of Lithic Debris from Indian Shelter.

Credit Where Credit is Due

In addition to offering advanced courses and electives, SAS students may enroll in in-person, credit-earning college courses at the University of the South. This fall, nine students are enrolled in 10 classes, including Cicero; Literature & Composition; Introduction to Macroeconomics; Intermediate Chinese; Intermediate Spanish; Introduction to Hispanic Literature; Macroeconomic Theory; and Calculus II. “At first, I was extremely nervous about my college class. However, after a while, I learned that I had nothing to worry about because my SAS education properly prepared me to thrive in the course”

Employment Opportunities

Working at SAS is a great way to fund an SAS education.

Shawna Midgett (1958-2021)

We are mourning the death of longtime SAS employee and friend Shawna Midgett. First in the business office and then in the academic offices, Shawna's combination of intelligence, competence, and tenacity improved the working lives of everyone around her. More than that, she cared deeply for the faculty and students she served and always made time to listen. Her optimism and faith throughout her illness were an inspiration to us. Shawna is survived by her husband Bill, her children, Andrew ’08, Rebecca ’04, and Molly ’09, and her beloved granddaughter, Willow.

Thank You!
