'Something fun to do'
Day Camp adventures bring kids' growth
Those sounds and songs bouncing from Pickerel Lake’s shores are accompanied these days by shrieks of delight.
It’s summer. Day Camp is in session at Camp Newaygo.
The first- through seventh-grade boys and girls taking part spend mornings in themed activities. Every afternoon brings time in the lake along with varied programs like team-building challenges, archery, swimming, fishing, hiking, arts and crafts and other activities.
Each kid takes away something from their adventures at the 92-year-old Newaygo camp.
“I feel like I can be myself, and I have a place that makes me happy,” says Breann, a 12-year-old.
Cole, 11, says: “There are a lot of fun games. Plus, we can play and do cool, active things.”
Hailey, 10, likes “tubing, making friends, the high-ropes course, low-ropes course. Everything.”
Brayden, 8, enjoys “the Gaga pit and all the friends at camp, along with the tubing and swim time. It also gives me something fun to do in the summer.”
Four more weekly sessions remain in July and August for Day Camp. Sign up here.

| Adult volunteers are being sought for a pilot mentoring program at Newaygo Public Schools launching this fall.
TrueBlue Academy is a partnership between TrueNorth Community Services’ TrueMentors program, Newaygo Police Department and the school district. TrueBlue is "an extension of the police department’s community policing and outreach efforts,” Newaygo Police Chief Georgia Andres said.
An informational meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. August 1 at the police department, 28 State Road in Newaygo. Please RSVP at bit.ly/TrueBlueMentorRSVP to attend.
TrueBlue's matches are to meet in school as a group, with TrueMentors providing weekly programming. The goal is to help Newaygo students graduate on time while developing them into peer leaders, said Chelsea Clark, TrueNorth’s Mentoring Outreach Advocate.
The program is made possible by funding from Fremont Area Community Foundation and United Way of the Lakeshore.
For more details or to apply, contact Hailey Maycroft at mentoring@truenorthservices.org or 231.924.0641, ext. 131.

Fighting those summer hunger pangs Food Pantry, Plant a Row, food truck feed children, families Summer can be a carefree time, with school out and vacations.
However, for many kids, instead of enjoyment, the season yields hunger and anxiety since they lose out on school meals. For struggling families, summer also brings extra food costs they can’t afford.
Nearly two-thirds of Newaygo County public school students, about 4,700, got free or reduced-price meals during the past school year, the Michigan Department of Education reports.
Making sure kids and their families can access healthy, nutritious food year-round is our commitment through our Food Pantry, Food Staples program, Plant a Row for Hunger campaign and Feeding America West Michigan food truck visits.
You can help by donating food, money or a few hours of your time.

Home-purchasing assistance
CNH offers Home Buyers Education class on August 4 Brad Hinken is seeing increased interest in the Center for Nonprofit Housing’s Home Buyer Services.
While no one enrolled in CNH’s Framework Homeownership online course in June 2017, five took part in the offering last month, said Hinken, TrueNorth Community Services’ Health and Community Solutions Director.
That upswell brought CNH to again offer its Home Buyer Education class. The next class is 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, August 4, at the TrueNorth Service Center, 6308 S. Warner Avenue in Fremont.
The free class is for anyone who wants to own a home, but doesn’t know where to start, said Laura Frey, Financial Empowerment Coach for CNH. The guest speakers are Robb Breen, a Realtor with RE/MAX River Valley, and Marisol Linstrom, a loan officer with Northpointe Bank.
