2026 Legislative Report Card

Tennessee physicians faced significant challenges during the 114th General Assembly's second session, with lawmakers advancing bills to restrict physician practice and expand non-physician scope of practice.
TMA's government affairs team successfully defended against harmful measures while securing a major victory: passage of the medical necessity determination bill (SB1753/HB1770).
This groundbreaking legislation ensures all physicians, including insurance company medical directors, meet the same standard of care criteria for medical necessity determinations, equipping providers with a powerful tool to challenge insurers' unlicensed medical practice.
