Congratulations to two Nashville Academy members who accepted awards at the Tennessee Medical Association's annual meeting on May 5
Dr. Ronald Overfield (pictured left) received the 2018 Outstanding Physician Award for his lifetime achievement in the field of medicine. Throughout his career, he has exhibited endless dedication to his patients, colleagues, and the medical profession. He served as a president of the Nashville Academy, Middle Tennessee Radiological Society, and the Tennessee Radiological Society. Dr. Overfield was president of the Baptist Hospital Medical Staff in 1981 and served as the chief of staff in 1994 and 1995. Also a former chief of radiology at Baptist Hospital, Dr. Overfield retired after 38 years of service to his patients.
Dr. William Schaffner (pictured right) received the 2018 Distinguished Physician Award. He is Medical Director and past president of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and has served on the Executive Board for the Infectious Diseases Society of America. He has published more than 400 research reports, editorials, and textbook chapters. He chaired Vanderbilt Department of Preventative Medicine for over 30 years, was Chief of the Division of Infection Diseases for seven simultaneous years, and was the Medical Director of the clinical microbiology laboratory for 11 years. Dr. Schaffner has received numerous national and local recognitions of his contributions.
