SEPTEMBER VOLUNTEERING
Greetings, Volunteers!

September is here, and while summer events are winding down, we still have volunteer opportunities available. Please find below a list of opportunities for the month of September!

We are actively seeking new volunteer partners --- are you or anyone you know involved with an organization that would be interested in hosting GTG participants to volunteer in exchange for free composting service? Let us know!

We are also hiring for our team of Farmers' Market Representative (a paid, seasonal position) as we continue to grow in the Somerville/Medford area! More details below.

As always, to sign up for an event this month and receive a month of free Garbage to Garden service, RSVP by email, and we will help answer any questions you may have. Remember, events are first-come, first-serve.

Happy Composting

Farmers' Market Representative
This is a flexible, part-time, paid opportunity to work with us to create a more sustainable community! Responsibilities include representing Garbage to Garden at community events, educating people about what we do at Garbage to Garden and how the service works, assisting with marketing strategies and outreach in the community, among others.

Must have reliable transportation and have weekly availability at these times:
Davis Square Farmers' Market: Wednesdays 10:30am-7:30pm
Medford Farmers' Market: Thursdays 1:30pm-8:30pm
Union Square Farmers' Market: Saturdays 7:00am-2:00pm
(Possible additional events on a month to month basis)

Help us spread the word!
There is no better time for us to spread the word about composting with us than in the peak of the late summer/early fall growing season. We have three opportunities to spread the word in exchange for free sevice:
GTG Lawn Signs: Place a lawn sign in a prominent location on your property (high visibility balconies and porches totally work!) for 3 months for 2 months of free service
Door hanging: Hit the streets with your mask and your favorite podcast to help distribute GTG door hangers ~50 door hangers (# varies based on street assignment)
for 1 month of free service
Write your local paper! Write a letter to the local paper (in Medford, Somerville, Arlington or Belmont) encouraging residents of your community to compost

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine
Volunteer Food Rescuers help transport food from food donor partners to local homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and other human service agencies in our communities. Each rescue averages 40 pounds of food, provides 32 meals and takes 45 minutes of time! Food rescues may be completed by public transport, by personal vehicle, on foot and even by bicycle. Whether it’s once-a-month, once-a-week, or once-a day volunteers are needed to provide a reliable food rescue service by fostering community connections to reduce food waste and food insecurity! Community Cooks
Community Cooks mobilizes individuals, businesses, civic, educational and faith-based groups to prepare home-cooked food for vulnerable populations seeking assistance from human service agencies in the Greater Boston area. We proudly partner with these agencies that, due to lack of funds and/or facilities, struggle to provide food for those they serve.
This is a great opportunity for you if you enjoy feeding your neighbors and are looking for a regular volunteer schedule. Community Cooks is looking for regularly scheduled, monthly volunteers to help with their program.

Mass Audubon
At Mass Audubon, they believe that every person can make a positive impact on protecting the nature of Massachusetts. One enjoyable way to have an impact on the environment is by volunteering at one of their wildlife sanctuaries or at their headquarters in Lincoln.

Volunteer with Food Link!

Food Link is looking for volunteers to help on a regular basis with the collection and distribution of donated food. Volunteers generally work in groups to collect food from grocery stores and bakeries, sort the food and then deliver it to social services agencies in the area.
