Dear friends and colleagues,
Two times each year, the U.S. Census Bureau releases data on a variety of topics including poverty, educational attainment, housing costs, race, etc… The Data Center has updated its widely popular Who Lives in New Orleans and Metro Parishes Now? web page with the most up-to-date data for the New Orleans area. The page includes data on:
- Race and ethnicity
- Age
- Educational attainment
- Internet access
- Access to vehicles
- Foreign-born population
- Geographic mobility
- Housing Costs and affordability
- and much, much more
In case you’re already finding it hard to keep your Lenten promise, let us distract you with a little data! Here are some interesting factoids from this latest update:
- In 2016, the share of population in Orleans Parish that is African American is 59 percent.
- The share of Hispanics has increased in all eight parishes, with Jefferson Parish witnessing the largest increase in growth, moving from 32,418 in 2000 to an estimate of 63,136 in 2016, an increase of 95 percent.
- The median age of the metro area has risen to 37.6 in 2000, up from 34.8 in 2016.
- Severe housing cost burden, where more than 50 percent of your household income goes towards rent, has grown from 24 percent in 2000 to 35 percent in 2016 in Orleans Parish while only rising to 25 percent nationally.
- The metro area has seen a shift in the number of children under 18 years old, shrinking from 358,092 in 2000 to 284,158 in 2016 with much of the loss driven by Orleans Parish.
- In 2016, only 60 percent of households in Orleans Parish have access to the Internet compared to 75 percent of households in St. Tammany Parish and 71 percent nationwide.
