Walk to End Alzheimer's

The number of Americans living with Alzheimer's is growing — and growing fast. Over 7 million Americans have Alzheimer's. The Memory Living Program at LCC helps meet the daily needs of those with advanced Alzheimer’s.  It was only natural that we would support the Dutchess-Ulster Walk to End Alzheimer’s with our own walk on Saturday, October 11th.

Helen, a resident, has always been an avid walker. She and her husband, Greg, enjoyed long walks either in the mornings or every evening after dinner. It was great exercise and time well spent together. Helen cared for Greg as they both lived with his dementia.

Soon after his passing, she too was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and moved to an assisted living home in Saugerties…where she walked regularly. When it became clear to her family that Helen required a higher level of care, they determined that Lutheran Care Center would be a good fit.

In addition to being grateful for her special care, the family is glad that their mom now lives closer to them. Her daughters take turns so that almost every day one of them visits with Mom.  Helen still loves to walk and is known throughout LCC as she strolls through the units and social spaces.

It was only natural that the family would sign her up to support the October Walk to End Alzheimer’s. They joined the many others who followed the blue footprints circling the LCC campus. (Helen is pictured with her daughter.)

Lisa and Steve Maine enjoyed the live music and fresh air as they walked with Steve’s mother, Elfreda, (seated in wheelchair). She has called LCC home for three years now.  Lisa says the connection to Alzheimer’s is personal beyond Alfreda.  Lisa’s grandfather was also diagnosed with the disease.

Fundraising efforts at LCC  netted a donation of nearly $1,400 to the Dutchess/Ulster Alzheimer’s Association. Thank you to all who contributed to the critical work of this organization!

It was a Halloween Family Affair!

Residents from Eastdale Village, as well as LCC resident families, and LCC staff showed off their creative talents. Decorated car trunks lined the LCC parking lot. Friends from the community enjoyed the outdoor trunk displays and the festive spirit created by a lively DJ.

Trunk or Treat Trunk or Treat

Indoors, the Recreation Center boasted both a scary haunted house and one a bit less intimidating. Parents were appreciative of the safe environment in which to trick or treat.  Residents delighted in passing out treats and enjoyed the fun, creative costumes and children’s bright faces.

Honor Flight… Grounded but Still Lifting Spirits

Lou DeFelice was thrilled to be selected by Hudson Valley Honor Flight (HVHF) to participate in a flight to Washinton D.C. HVHF, a nonprofit organization that “honors American Veterans for all their sacrifices,” transports these heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit their memorials at no cost to them. Unfortunately, health issues prevented Louie from joining the flight but that did not stop HFHF from honoring him.  On October 2nd, four representatives staged an Honor Walk at LCC, lining the hallway with cheering, flag-waving fans.

There were words of gratitude for Lou's service followed by a special luncheon in the Chapel with family, including an amazing cheesecake for dessert.

Giving Tuesday – Giving is Back!

There’s something special about watching a movie, a special event or even an exercise program outdoors on a big screen. The Recreation Team is eager to host outdoor events during the warmer months – engaging resident families and nearby community members.  Events celebrating Independence Day, summer concerts, and the Summer Olympics would be paired with fun games and interactive activities.

Your support in funding this year’s Giving Tuesday cause is appreciated.

The Large Screen TV would be used indoors in the colder months featuring not only movie nights but also activities around resident favorites such as The Thanksgiving Day Parade, the New Year’s Eve ball drop and the Miss America Pageant.

Please consider supporting this project…another way of expanding our recreational activities. The large screen TV purchase includes high grade speakers, related technology, a cart, and even a healthy supply of popcorn. Plan to join us in the fun!
