Reuven Rubin: The Story of David
On Tuesday, January 28, Hebrew College’s Winter Art Exhibit will open on our shared campus in Newton. “Reuven Rubin: The Story of David, A Visual Interpretation” features a set of lithographs by renowned Israeli artist Reuven Rubin that tells the story of the biblical King David. Rubin, whose house in Tel Aviv has been preserved as a museum for his work, was active in the years before and after the establishment of the State of Israel, and is considered a founding figure of the Israeli fine art scene. The King David work on exhibit was produced in the 1970s, and features scenes and moments from across David’s journey from shepherd to king. The exhibit opening will feature remarks from Mike Gildesgame, who donated the work and whose family has a long legacy supporting Israeli art.

In our final episode of the fall season, discover how Hebrew College's Rabbi Or Rose and his colleague, Reverend Rob Schenck, are modeling the kind of courageous conversations we need to build bridges of understanding across faiths. Learn about the importance of confronting difficult issues head-on, the demographic shifts happening within religious communities, and the urgent need for honest and informed dialogue. Rabbi Rose and Rev. Schenck will be co-teaching a three-session Tamid adult learning course on this topic beginning Jan. 16.

Success on Our Way; an Alternative to the Prosperity Gospel
By Rav Hazzan Ken Richmond ‘21, Co-Senior Rabbi, Temple Israel of Natick, MA
Joseph, whose story begins in this week’s Torah portion, may be the only character in the Torah referred to as successful. In next week’s portion, he will become the second most powerful person in Egypt, but it is in this week’s portion that he is referred to as successful three times (Genesis 32:2, 32:3, and 32:23), all during his downward trajectory, as he is sold into slavery, falsely accused, and thrown into jail. As our hero, the slave and prisoner, is repeatedly called successful, our first reaction may be to quote Inigo Montoya from the Princess Bride: “I do not think that word means what you think it means!” But this seems to be the point.

TEEN BEIT MIDRASH HANUKKAH PARTY & LEARNING
Hebrew College Teen Beit Midrash (TBM) students gathered in the home of two of our students for an early Hanukkah celebration. Students and parents studied the debate between Hillel and Shammai (Talmud tractate Shabbat 21b) about how to light a hanukkiah. Shammai says that you start with eight and go down to one and Hillel says the opposite—but neither sage gives a reason. We speculated on what the reason could be. In a world where answers tend towards black or white, TBM teaches students to consider many different reasons and possibilities.
