Welcoming the Bonim Beyachad Inaugural Cohort
Hebrew College's MaTaRoT Bonim Beyachad Fellowship launched recently with an inaugural cohort of 20 part-time Jewish educators from across the country. Bonim Beyachad is a 10-month cohort-based fellowship to support adults who are new to teaching in part-time and supplemental Jewish educational settings. "As Jewish educators, many of whom do this as an additional job, we are dedicated to ensuring our children have the best and most meaningful experience in religious school possible. However, with so few of us having formal training in education or pedagogy, we are in some ways limited by 'not knowing what we don’t know.' Bonim Beyachad offers a unique opportunity to explore our own relationships to Judaism and Jewish education while learning concrete skills to bring into our classrooms, helping us reach our full potential as educators." — Gabrielle Isaac-Herzog, St. Paul MN

Fellows meet regularly in a series of Zoom seminars, and convened last month at Hebrew College for in-person learning to deepen their teaching.

Freedom to Participate: Rabbinical Students Volunteer as Poll Chaplains
| |
Earlier this month, a cohort of Hebrew College rabbinical students traveled to Pennsylvania on election day to serve as interfaith poll chaplains, functioning as a nonpartisan, pro-democracy, spiritual presence. The students received their poll chaplaincy training through a program operated by Sojourners Action in partnership with Faiths United to Save Democracy. “This is an opportunity to engage in sacred work,” said Shanah Heh student Rafi Ellenson on the eve of the trip. “We will help to ensure that voting is a fair and equitable process by applying the skills we are cultivating in the classroom/beit midrash.”

An Appreciation at Our Matriarch’s Burial Place
Sarah’s life, like most people’s, was complex, and her personality was filled with contradictions: assertive and submissive; young and beautiful; old and withered; compassionate and demanding. Her determination to help Abraham fulfill his divine purpose animated her throughout her 127 years. This very determination played in my mind over and over last week, as I took part in the Hebrew College/Tamid study trip to the American South. This three-day trip served to help participants better understand the Civil Rights movement—its context and history and Jews’ role in it. To say it taught me a lot is an understatement.

"With the support of faculty, staff, and our new campus partner RUACH, I have been able to bring my dance practice to campus. I move between the Beit Midrash, where the oral tradition comes alive in chevruta study, to the Beit Neshama, the gorgeous studio down the hall. There, I invite my whole body to consider the texts of Talmud, midrash and prayer. It's important to me to note that embodiment is not new to our tradition. Rabbi Nachman of Breslov already said that to truly understand a nigun you need to feel each of its tones in a different part of the body. I bring my contemporary dance practices to that teaching—listen for the body's impulse and wisdom. I'm grateful to be touring this work that I’ve been developing at the beit neshama."

Playing Host: Interreligious Meeting for National Congregational Councils
On Wednesday, leadership from both the National Council of Synagogues and National Council of Churches convened for a day of learning and conversation across faiths. They were joined by Hebrew College Miller Center Director Rabbi Or Rose for a text study. “It was an honor to share the work of the Miller Center with our esteemed colleagues from the National Council of Synagogues and National Council of Churches,” said Rabbi Or Rose about his session with the attendees. “Engaging together in honest and heartfelt conversation about the challenges and possibilities of pluralism today is a necessity.”
