Favorite class while at Brebeuf Jesuit? Intro To World Religions. Notoriously the hardest class my freshman year, it has also been the one that has stuck with me throughout the years. It opened my eyes to the larger world and encouraged a broader, more inclusive way of thinking...that despite all our differences, we all fundamentally strive for acceptance, kindness, and compassion for our fellow man.
Favorite teacher/coach? Mr. Hicks / Ms. Torke.
What was inspiring about him/her?
Speech was a huge part of my High School experience. Under the tutelage of Mr. Hicks and Ms. Torke, I learned and practiced so many important life lessons...how to be an effective speaker, how to handle myself under pressure, how to be an engaging storyteller, how to actively listen and most importantly, how to find my voice. It’s this last lesson that has been the most invaluable. It has helped me as a minority striving for equality in this world. It has given me the courage to speak up for myself and let my opinions be heard. It has made me a strong and inspiring leader in my communities and in my field of work. For these things, I am forever indebted to them.
What are you doing now?
I just completed my directorial debut for Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre, just down the street from Brebeuf Jesuit. My production of The King & I runs there now through May 19. While back in NYC, I continue to pursue my career in performing, having just completed my 9th production of Miss Saigon last year. I’ve done my fair share of TV, Film, and commercials, as well. Like all NYC actors, I’ve appeared in several Law & Order episodes. I’m also the Co-Founder of Broadway Barkada, a group that supports and promotes Filipino artists in the performing arts. We have performed in some of the most prestigious venues around the country....The White House, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Carnegie Hall, and most recently singing the national anthem at Madison Square Garden. I’m most proud of the work we’ve done in our almost two decades together.
How did Brebeuf Jesuit help shape you into the person you are today?
My education at Brebeuf was instrumental in shaping who I am today. My work ethic, my discipline, my thirst for knowledge, and my unwavering spirit I attribute to my years spent at Brebeuf. But more importantly, my need to be in service to others, my compassion, my global sensibility, and my accessibility I also attribute to my time here. I am grateful that my education was not just academic in nature, but also consisted of spiritual and character growth as well.
Words of wisdom or advice to our current students.
Enjoy the time there. Listen to your teachers. Make long lasting friendships. Step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Do something creative every day. And lead with kindness and compassion. We are lucky to have you at Brebeuf and I know Brebeuf will have a profound effect on you as it did on me.
