| A Message from the Consul GeneralDespite the wet weather reminiscent of the rainy season in Japan, May was full of Japan related activities in the Sunshine State.
I attended the Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month Kickoff Celebration organized by the Asian American Advisory Board of Miami Dade County. It was my pleasure to see Japanese Iaido (the way of the sword) demonstration by a local follower. I am grateful to the Asian American Advisory Board for promoting Japanese culture, helping to promote mutual understanding between our two countries.
Miho Takeda, a former synchronized swimmer, was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame for her extraordinary achievements at numerous Olympic and World competitions. I was honored to join in such an auspicious occasion which took place in Ft Lauderdale. She continues to be involved in synchronized swimming coaching younger generations. I sincerely hope they will be inspired to do well at Tokyo 2020.
I attended the graduation ceremony of the Youth Automotive Training Center (YATC). YATC was founded in 1984 by Jim Moran and provides technical training to disadvantaged youths. I was deeply moved seeing the bright faces of the young graduates who worked hard to turn their life around! Good luck!
The Consulate co-hosted a sake tasting event with the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at UCF. I thank Gyu-Kaku restaurant in Orlando and Mitsukoshi for sponsoring the event.
On June 13 (9-11 AM), the Consulate and Port Tampa Bay will co-organize the Japan-Tampa Business Forum. The event will feature presentations by top executives from five leading Japanese technology/engineering companies active in Florida. The event is open to the public. Please click here to register in advance if you are interested.
With summer around the corner, more Japanese festivals and events will start taking place. In its 13th year, Tampa Natsumatsuri, a community event run by the Florida JET Alumni Association, will be held on Saturday, June 23. The festival will include many traditional Japanese games, foods and crafts. I hope you can make it to this event!
