Owl Spotlight
WISH Academy 12th-grader Ian Murray is an impressive young person! His positive energy and kindness shine through when he greets adults and peers alike on campus and gives them a warm hello. Ian joined WISH as a Kindergartener in 2010 and we've had the privilege of watching him grow into an ambitious young adult who has a passion for Mechanical Engineering, Music, and History. He shines in all of his classes as he continues to apply himself in our Engineering pathway. Outside of school, he is actively involved in the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center Rowing Team and has competed in Regattas throughout the state. Ian has been accepted into Cal Poly Pomona for Mechanical Engineering and is anticipating additional acceptances from the UC's he's applied to as well. He's also seriously considering attending university in his mother's homeland of Switzerland. Our hearts are full as we prepare to see him soar away--we know he will thrive!

In the Classroom
Engineering, Astronomy, and Pre-Calculus are Ms. Doyle’s favorite subjects and many of our students' favorites too! Ms. Doyle is the head of the Math department and an inspirational teacher, with several impressive science degrees as well. She led the Academy students in winning the Cube Sat engineering competition and, just this last week, her Academic Decathlon team medaled in 9 events and took 3rd place overall. She is a champion for her Academy students and maintains high expectations for them. Students describe her as a teacher who is, “always there to connect and revisit hard concepts and who gets excited for us when we learn.” When asked, Ms. Doyle shared that her favorite part about teaching at WISH Academy is working with students of all abilities and having the freedom to motivate her students to reach their full potential both in and out of the classroom. Her commitment to the WISH Academy youth is truly a gift.

Good Times
Our 11th-Grade students had the unique opportunity this week to get a guided tour at LACMA, exploring an exhibit titled "The Artist as a Social Conscience." Docents led the tour, which explored how artists, like Al Weiwei and Joe Ray, have used art throughout history to inspire dialogue around race, class, gender, war, and other social issues. It was a fascinating exploration of expression and message in art history.

Sports Superstars
At Senior Night last Friday, our WISH Academy athletes dominated the court and field, pulling off a hat trick for our Owls. The Girls' Basketball Team crushed it on the court, ending their season as co-champions of the Ocean League. The Boys' Basketball Team took an early lead, ultimately securing a 57-55 victory for the Owls. Thanks to a strong defense, our WAHS Soccer Team capped off the night with a 1-0 victory. All three of our teams are now in the playoffs and we're all geared up to watch them compete this week and next!

Hoots Student "There are so many things I love about WISH, but especially the teachers. I've always been into art and spent a lot of time practicing. Mr. Woody has been really encouraging and supportive, and his drawing club, with Mr. Sotelo, helped me hone my skills. My advisory teacher from last year, Ms. Moore, was one of my all-time favorite teachers. I had her every day and she would make complex ideas easily understandable and digestible. She always put our well-being above everything else and she was really good at reading people. She would also let people be real; she cared about how we felt. I also really like AP Chemistry with Mr. Khalil. It's a very hard class but I enjoy it. Mr. Khalil gives us in-depth explanations and clear algorithms for the equations, paired with real-life applications that are so cool. He also has a great vibe and is helpful, available, and really laid-back. I'm also a member of Link Crew and really love the connections there, especially if someone is having a hard day, I like to be there to cheer them up and make their day better."
--Emilio B., WAHS 12th grade Student
Family
"This is now our 13th year at WISH, and it would be an understatement to say our kids are thriving! Our son Aidan is an 11th grader at WISH Academy High School, (and our daughter Rylee is in 7th grade in the Middle), and we feel so incredibly grateful to have found this amazing community. Aidan is currently enrolled in multiple AP courses, while also starting on the WISH Academy Varsity Basketball Team. Through the dual enrollment program at WISH, Aidan has had the opportunity to take courses at Santa Monica City College. Meanwhile, we continue to be impressed with the level of engagement of the faculty and responsiveness of the administration at WISH. We know choosing a high school can be a very difficult decision, but we are so happy we chose WISH. With its dedication to high achievement, social-emotional growth, and serving ALL children, WISH is a truly remarkable school." -- Melanie and Wayne Goldstein, WAHS Parents
Faculty
"WISH Academy students rock! I love these kids and seeing their growth in American Sign Language makes me so happy! The perseverance, fun, and constant joy they bring to the classroom and each other makes this a great place to teach." --Ms. K, ASL Teacher
