Attorney General Jeff Landry led the LADOJ through a great month of September. From serving justice to protecting rights, our office continues fighting and winning for Louisiana. Below are some highlights from the successful month.
Attorney General Jeff Landry's fight to protect families and homeowners faced with bankruptcy or foreclosure due to the rising costs of flood insurance made its way to the courtroom. Solicitor General Liz Murrill presented oral arguments that the new Risk Rating 2.0 will increase premiums, calling it unlawful and unfair to policy holders. More on our efforts in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana may be found here.
AG Jeff Landry and SG Liz Murrill achieved a huge win for Louisiana when a federal judge ruled that oil and gas leases in the Gulf of Mexico must be expanded. As the Attorney General noted, Judge Cain's ruling is a "major win not only for the rule of law, but also for Louisiana jobs and affordable energy."
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit sided with AG Jeff Landry, ruling that the Biden administration "ran afoul" of the First Amendment by trying to pressure social media platforms over controversial COVID-19 content. AG Jeff Landry called this decision a major win against censorship.
Our office has worked to help create a tracking system of rape kits. As our Special Projects Coordinator Monica Taylor opined recently, this system is going to help many victims of sexual assault become survivors - "taking some of the control and power back into their lives."
Our investigation into Spring View Medical Clinic is ongoing. We continue to encourage those who feel aggrieved to file a consumer dispute with our office.
The opioid epidemic has devastated countless families across our State. Check out AG Jeff Landry's op-ed on the crisis and what we've done to fight back by clicking here.
Our Cyber Crime Unit is asking for public assistance with the ongoing investigation into Jessie Tyler Rhodes, a West Monroe man we arrested on charges related to the possession of sexual abuse images and videos of children.
AG Jeff Landry chaired the Violent Crime Task Force aimed at seeking solutions to the crime plaguing our State. As the Attorney General noted, "bad people on our streets that are inflicting a tremendous amount of damage and pain to the citizens of this State" must be brought to justice. We hope this Task Force can help the Legislature find ways to improve the criminal justice system in Louisiana.
AG Jeff Landry delivered a major win to crime victims and their families with the Louisiana Supreme Court ruling that pardons, acts of mercy, and the power of clemency belong to the governor — not district attorneys or the courts. Read the Attorney General's take on woke district attorneys and post-conviction plea agreements here.
Upon investigation of the unauthorized use of public funds at the LaSalle Parish Ward 10 Recreational District, our Louisiana Bureau of Investigation secured an arrest warrant for former Recreational District Board Treasurer/Secretary Johnnie Bethard to be charged for theft, criminal conspiracy, and malfeasance in office.
AG Jeff Landry has filed a lawsuit to block the Governor from short-circuiting the rules and procedures of the Board of Pardons. "The court must ensure our clemency process advances in a legal and transparent way,” said the Attorney General. “The victims of Willie Tart, Larry Roy, and other murderers deserve truth, transparency, and justice; I am fighting to deliver that for them.”
AG Jeff Landry led a coalition in support of the Racehorse Health and Safety Act of 2023 (RHSA). Instead of one-size-fits-all, RHSA offers scientific medication control and safety rules for each unique breed: Thoroughbred, Standardbred, and Quarter Horse. Read AG Jeff Landry's take on protecting the American racehorses here.
Earlier this year, LCMC Health and AG Jeff Landry took legal action to safeguard a collaboration with Tulane that would increase access to quality health care in a community with many underserved minorities. This partnership underwent a thorough review and approval from the LADOJ, which has been validated by a federal court’s decision.
