The Global Gaucho

Welcome to the Summer 2024 issue of The Global Gaucho, UC Santa Barbara Education Abroad Program’s newsletter for all things study abroad! This coming academic year, 1,242 Gauchos will be studying abroad at 165+ programs in over 40 countries and 106 scholarships have been awarded this year to make these transformational experiences possible. We are excited for our students to embark on their journeys of personal growth and look forward to learning about their adventures when they return. Hear from our 2023-24 cohort about the impact of their experiences abroad below. 

Our EAP graduating seniors celebrated the memories of another year abroad at this year’s Spring Celebration. EAP Faculty Director Dr. Fabio Rambelli, Ambassador Chair Jim Maloney ’84, and graduating senior Nancy Zamora ’24 all shared a few words with the group before country stoles were distributed. Congratulations to the Class of 2024!

Read how Elias Veran ’23 found his way to a UCEAP alum's olive farm outside rural French village Pertuis, where he and other students gathered last November for a restful weekend with new friends, farm-fresh food, exciting discussions, and refreshing dips in the pond.

“Being immersed in a foreign culture provided me with insight into the nuances of my own culture back home, and how community and identity are tied to my roots in California. I learned 

that my own culture is not the 'normal,' and that all experiences and people have value. I can confidently say that I am transformed and a better person because of those around me and these experiences abroad.”

“During my study abroad in London, I discovered new facets of myself that I hadn't fully appreciated before. This journey wasn't just about exploring new places; it was about uncovering a passion for travel that runs deep within me.”

“I now feel that I have a transformed worldview. With my new experiences I see how big the world is and how many different cultures, perspectives, 

and opportunities there truly are. This has now greatly influenced my academic pursuits, career ambitions, and personal objectives, which ultimately has encouraged me to think more about my future.”
