Founded in 1890 as the first school of pedagogy in the U.S., NYU Steinhardt empowers instructors to explore the art of education, which gives their students the chance to learn in innovative and engaging ways.

The top stories in this edition of Insights, Impact, and Innovation show how we’re carrying on our pioneering pedagogical legacy. We bolster educators’ careers with opportunities like international travel and scholarly community. Then, those educators bring their insights back to the lab, the academic environment, or the classroom—wherever that classroom may be.

As we start a new semester, I look forward to seeing how our faculty, researchers, and students explore unique educational approaches at Steinhardt and beyond.

Astor International Travel Fellowship Celebrates 10 Years

2024 marked the 10th anniversary of the Astor International Travel Fellowship for New York City Teachers, which celebrates full-time classroom teachers in New York City public schools by awarding them a fully sponsored international trip to study pedagogy and classroom innovation with Steinhardt faculty.

18 Students Graduate from NYU Prison Education Program

This cross-university program offers free college courses to incarcerated students and helps them complete their NYU degree after release. Shabnam Javdani, associate professor of applied psychology at Steinhardt, is the Prison Education Program faculty director.

Thanks to an NYU Teaching Advancement Grant, Clinical Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy (OT) Lisa Raymond-Tolan took Steinhardt OT students on a trip to study how children played at The Yard, an interactive and unrestricted adventure playground on Governors Island in New York City.

Dean’s Office Program Bolsters Underrepresented Groups in Academia

Steinhardt’s Faculty First-Look (FFL) program seeks to increase underrepresented populations in academia by helping scholars from around the world understand what it takes to prepare for future faculty careers. The success of FFL at Steinhardt has led to expansion across NYU.

2024 Impact Highlights

young musicians took part in peacebuilding workshops led by Heddy Lahmann, clinical assistant professor and deputy director of international education, at Carnegie Hall's World Orchestra Week.

bodega owners and customers shared their experiences for a peer-reviewed article on attitudes toward online grocery shopping co-authored by Angela Trude, assistant professor of nutrition.

charter members, including Steinhardt, formed the World Dance Education Alliance, a collaborative platform that unites dance arts education and professional dance training around the world.

New York-based nonprofits received clinical support from Communicative Sciences and Disorders faculty and students.

free counseling sessions for food and beverage workers took place through Steinhardt's Center for Counseling and Community Wellbeing.

Music Therapy master’s students worked at clinical sites in schools, clinics, and community centers all over the New York metro area.

CoNNECT organizes events designed to gather EdTech professionals as well as Steinhardt’s Educational Communication and Technology (ECT) community. Co-founded by Steinhardt alums Trace Hagan (MA ’18, Learning Technology and Experience Design) and Maurice Boothe Jr. (MA ’21, Learning Technology and Experience Design; pictured)—who is also an instructional technologist at NYU Meyers and currently pursuing his PhD in ECT at Steinhardt—CoNNECT recently held their 2024 Unconference, a collaborative and participant-centered EdTech event.

A new book by Media, Culture, and Communication Assistant Professor j. Siguru Wahutu—In the Shadow of the Global North: Journalism in Postcolonial Africa—speaks with and looks at the reportage of African journalists depicting their own continent.

The Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions put on a production of Into the Woods last Fall, and the book writer and original Broadway director James Lapine attended a performance! The Spring musical will be The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, running from Friday, February 7, through Monday, February 10.

The National Institutes of Health awarded Pablo Ripollés, assistant professor of music technology and psychology, and Magdalena Fuentes, assistant professor of music technology and integrated design and media, a two-year, $706,367 R34 grant to study the feasibility of an intentional music listening intervention for stroke patients’ mental health recovery.
