A Message from Alumni Council
| |
Dear Fellow Denisonians,
On behalf of everyone on Denison’s Alumni Council, I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year! I know we all share the hope that 2021 will be a better year than the one that just ended.
I hope you have been enjoying these alumni update emails, including the messages from Alumni Council members. Our mission statement charges the Alumni Council to be a diverse, representative body that serves as a conduit between the University and the broader alumni body. To further that mission, we are always looking for potential new Council members. These can be alumni who have been actively engaged over the years or those who are looking for a way to become more involved. If you think that might be you, we would love to hear from you!
Our Nominating Committee meets each spring to consider prospective new members. Its primary criteria include a willingness to be engaged with the University and in alumni events, and bringing a diverse (in every sense of the word!) voice to our Council table. If you are interested in being considered to serve on the Alumni Council, or if you would like to learn more about what the position entails, please email me at jtwill84@gmail.com.
I hope to see you online later this month as we hold our annual Denison Everywhere event online this year! Please see the details below and register today!
Sincerely,
Josh Williams ’07
Alumni Council President

The 2021 edition of Denison Everywhere is coming on January 26 and 27. It’s the time each year when alumni, family, and friends traditionally gather to celebrate in cities across the country and around the globe, but we are holding this year’s event online.
To make participation convenient for Denisonians worldwide, we have scheduled two celebrations — one on the evening of January 27 for the Western Hemisphere, preceded by one on the evening of January 26 for the Eastern Hemisphere. Registration is now open! You can find up-to-date details on our Denison Everywhere landing page. Rest assured that, even though we won’t be together physically, the #DenisonEverywhere tradition will live on. Register now!

Join us live on February 9 as Gus discusses his memoir, “The Wolves of Helmand: A View from Inside the Den of Modern War,” with Denison Professor of English Margot Singer.
He will share his experiences serving as a Marine in Afghanistan and talk about his new book that is both a heartfelt homage to the Marine brotherhood with whom he served and an expression of respect and love for the people of Afghanistan who ultimately trusted, shared, and appreciated their purpose.
Registrants can purchase “The Wolves of Helmand” online from the Denison Bookstore, and all of the proceeds from the sale will go directly to student scholarship funds.

As challenging as the fall semester was for colleges across the country, most experts foresee the beginning of the in-person spring semester as being even more daunting for a variety of reasons.
Campus leaders representing all of Denison’s academic and administrative divisions have been busy planning for the return of students to Granville as classes begin on February 1.
You can read more here about what Denison is doing to replicate the success it achieved in the fall here.

In this recounting of personal achievement and accompanying photo essay, you can witness the achievement that takes place when a college committed to athletics — and more importantly, its athletes — creates innovative opportunities for improvement during a pandemic.
In this moving and insightful piece, you’ll find that, just like with its artists and scientists, Denison has been both imaginative and effective in giving its athletes a chance to improve, compete, and lead, even though intercollegiate competition had been called off. Learn more here.

Recently, Denison’s talented multimedia producer, Patrick Smith, ventured out into the elements with his cameras, lenses, drone — and parka — to bring you this breathtaking 56-second video reminder of how absolutely stunning the campus can be when the snow flies in Granville. Enjoy!
