IMPORTANT UPDATES FROM PRINCIPAL GREG VANSLAMBROOK
Please read the message below from Principal Greg VanSlambrook for updates regarding:
- SnoBall Dance Postponement
- Upcoming MLK Convocation
- Blues Week
- Masks
- Athletic Events
- Vaccination and Boosters
As you can see from our updated COVID data chart below, with 26 positive cases reported in the first two days of school, the Omicron variant has put us in a similar heightened state of COVID cases, as we are seeing throughout the broader community. This is a time of uncertainty and adjustment for everyone. Our priority is to maintain our ability for everyone to have daily in-person school, which we are confident that we can achieve.
In consultation this week with our medical task force, we are planning the following near-term adaptations to ensure that priority is met:
SnoBall Dance Postponed (previously scheduled for Friday, January 14)
While we are disappointed to do so, it is clear that this particular event needs to be postponed at this time. It would be bringing a large number of students mixing in a small space without the possibility of distancing. As a result of this postponement, the academic calendar on Friday, January 14 will return to a regular-schedule Day 1 with NO EARLY RELEASE, while it was previously planned as an early release day due to the dance. Those who have already purchased dance tickets online will automatically receive a refund in the coming days. We are currently looking at options for rescheduling in a month or two based on venue availability.
MLK Convocation on Thursday, January 13
The convocation will still take place but in an adapted format. The programming will be streamed to classrooms rather than putting everyone in the gym together for an hour.
Blues Week
The annual spirit week, which is scheduled for January 18-21, will continue to include daily dress up themes and school spirit competitions. However, it will not include a pep rally, which was previously scheduled for Friday, January 21.
Masks
Masks will continue to be required indoors regardless of vaccination status until further notice. The Indiana State Department of Health guidance has made clear that masks are an important enough mitigation strategy, and that schools that adopt daily masking do not need to require quarantines for close contact.
Athletic Events
Athletic events will continue as planned, with all attendees asked to adhere to our indoor masking policy inside the school. We may consider attendance adaptations to individual events on a case-by-case basis.
Vaccination and Boosters
We continue to urge vaccination and strongly encourage everyone to get a booster as soon as eligible. We will not compile booster data at this time, but may do so in the future.

Contingency Planning for
Inclement Weather
As we head into winter, we like to review our contingency procedures in the event of cancellations or delays due to weather.
Any weather-related delays or closings will be communicated to the Brebeuf community via email, text alert, Twitter, and local news channels.
In case of the need for a weather-related delay, we will use our 2-hour delayed opening schedule, with the first class beginning at 10:30 a.m.
In case of the need for weather-related school closing, the first time this takes place, we have the calendar flexibility to take one true "snow day," with no asynchronous assignments given online. Any further closings beyond the first one will be asynchronous learning days. On those days, students will receive assignments to complete at home via Google Classroom for each of their classes that would have met that day. We will always communicate about asynchronous learning day expectations via email to students and parents any time they come up.
We hope this helps everyone know what to expect, but we also appreciate your flexibility in the event that things don't always go as planned.
Thank you!

CANCER AWARENESS NIGHT
Hello, Brebeuf Fans!
The Girls and Boys Basketball teams would like to invite you to celebrate with us on a special GOLDEN NIGHT on January 28! That evening, while the Braves battle the Trojans of Chatard High School, we would like to take the evening to celebrate all those individuals we know and love who are or have previously battled cancer as part of our Cancer Awareness Night.
As part of our evening, we invite all our fans to wear gold to the game. To show their support, the basketball teams will be wearing special yellow warm-up shirts and shoe laces to remember the survivors and victims of pediatric cancer. In addition to this, the basketball teams would like to recognize any Brebeuf students who may be battling cancer or who are themselves survivors of cancer. If you would like to be a part of this celebration, please reach out to Sam Glowinski at SGlowinski@brebeuf.org.
In addition, the basketball teams will be raising money to donate towards pediatric cancer research and treatment.
Finally, we invite all fans in attendance to fill out a special sign that will be available at the doors to honor all those we know who have battled cancer.
