Melissa Hilmes, MD

Dr. Hilmes teaches the Pediatric Radiology ACE. She attributes her choice of specialty to taking a Pediatric Radiology course during her fourth year of 

medical school, taught by Dr. Richard Heller, who she described as a "fun, energetic, and joyful teacher." She returned to Vanderbilt after her residency and fellowship so that she could work alongside him. She now teaches the course he taught, and states, "I enjoy watching the transformation of students from knowing little about pediatric radiology to a comfortable familiarity with some basics of image interpretation. I am proud to send them away with useful skills."

Students are encouraged to provide feedback about courses and voice opinions about their medical education by contacting the Student Curriculum Committee. Utilize the REDCap form to share thoughts.

RESEARCH YEAR OUT

Third years who would like to conduct a year of funded research can apply to the Vanderbilt Medical Scholars Program (MSP) and/or the Vanderbilt SCRIPS Program. The programs share an application process; more details are here. 

Vanderbilt University issued its first diplomas to 61 Doctors of Medicine in 1875. Students in the first graduating classes had no lab work, which was not embedded into the curriculum until 1895.
