Educator Update

Hello 4-H Families,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful 2023 and I wish you the best in 2024. January also marks one year since I've taken on the Dunn County 4-H Educator Position. It has been a great year for me. I have enjoyed getting to know the 4-H families throughout the county. I plan to visit more clubs and project meetings in the coming year to allow me to meet even more of our Dunn County 4-Hers.

I also enjoyed being able to continue the quality programing that was already in place, as well as introduce some new activities. We will be brining back even more activities this year, and trying out some new programing. I would like to strongly encourage you to take advantage of the programs Dunn County 4-H has to offer. One of the benefits of being in 4-H is that you have access to these programs at little to no cost.

This month's newsletter highlights some new programs happening at the county and state level, as well as some old favorites. I hope you can find something that interests you. As always, do not hesitate to reach out if you have a question or concern.

Camp Counselor Applications

Are you in High School and looking for ways to grow your leadership skills? Do you want to make new friends? Are you interested in volunteering in a fast-past, rewarding environment?

If so, camp is for you! We are accepting applications for Camp Counselors for the 2024 4-H Summer camp. All High School aged members are invited to apply. You do not need camp experience to be a counselor. We will teach you everything you need to know. Information about camp and the application process can be found on the Clark County 4-H website. Applications close January 7.

4-H Award Season

It's time to work on your award applications! Applications are due by March 1. Zoom interviews will be scheduled in March.

Middle and High School 4-Hers are invited to apply for Citizenship, Leadership, and Achievement Awards.
Members who have earned all three are invited to apply for the Key Award, the highest level of achievement in 4-H.
Graduating Seniors are invited to apply for Dunn County Leaders Council Scholarships.

4-H Meat Judging Contest

Have you been to your local meat market or grocery store lately and think you could choose the best cut of meat out of the case? Have you ever watched a live animal contest and thought you could choose what animals would provide the best meat products? This is your opportunity to put those skills to work.

This contest tests the knowledge of youth in the placement of carcass and retail cut classes, carcass grading, and retail cut identification. Top teams earn the opportunity to compete at regional and national competitions.

Interstate Livestock Show Committee

Interested in contributing your ideas to the 2024 Interstate Livestock Show? Join our Zoom meeting on February 20th, 2024 at 7:00pm. We are looking for both youth and adult voices to shape this year's show! Contact Lindsay for more details at lindsay.spindler@wisc.edu.

Upcoming Events, Programs, and Activities

Art U 2024- Registration Closes January 3rd!

This program has become very popular this year, but there is still room for a few more participants!

Mondays from January 29- March 4; 6:30-7:30
Grades k-6 - virtual by zoom
7th and up - in person on the UW-Stout Campus
March 4th all participant celebration at UW Stout
$5 for 4-H members, $10 for non members

The Tri-County Art Program is back for 2024! Art U is a virtual art program that is ran by UW-Stout Art Students. Youth of all ages are able to participate. Grades k-6 will learn from the comfort of their homes over zoom, and grades 7 and up are invited to the UW-Stout Campus where they get to experience what it is like to be an art student at a UW School.

We are opening this program up to non 4-H members, so tell your friends!

Tri- County Performing Arts Festival

The 2023 Tri-County Performing Arts Festival will be held on February 24th at Elk Mound High School.

Registration is now open!

This is a low stress, opportunity for youth to perform a play or a musical number and get feedback from judges. It allows a young person to grow in confidence, learn teamwork, and perform in front of an audience.

You can sign up as an individual,small group, or club. This is a great way to grow community and teamwork within your 4-H Club. feel free to reach out if you need more information, or ideas for pieces to perform.

Every participate will get a ribbon and certificate. Awards are given to the best performances in each category.

Horse Project Spring Round-Up

February 11th, 2pm
Dunn County Government Center, room 60
REQUIRED for anyone showing at the Dunn County Fair

The horse project will be hosting their annual Spring Round Up meeting for all current and new horse project members. They will be discussing schedule changes for the 2024 Dunn County Fair.

If you are new to 4-H this is a great opportunity to learn more about the project.

Spring Break Stay-cation!

No plans for spring break? No Problem! Dunn County 4-H will be offering 3 days of programing on March 12-14. Youth will have the opportunity to do a wide range of activities such as cooking, crafts, games, and outdoor recreation. Members grades 3 and up will meet from 9am-12, and Cloverbuds will meet from 1-3pm.

Sign ups and a detailed schedule will be coming soon.

We are looking for volunteers to help supervise the event and lead activities. If you have a skill or project area you would like to present to the youth, let us know! Email at zachary.rozmiarek@wisc.edu.

County Project Meetings

County Wide Project meetings are open to any 4-H member who meets the age criteria. If you are unsure about adding a project area, these meetings are an excellent way to explore and learn more. Projects can be added any time before May 1st in 4honline.com.

Support Opportunities

Trip Funding

The Dunn County Leaders Council is excited to help fund your 4-H trip or activity! The Leaders Council is committed to funding 10% of all state and national trips and activities. The Leaders Council may fund at greater amounts depending on the number of participants and budgetary allowances.

Youth Support Fund

The Youth Support Fund is largely supported by donations from community members and businesses. Its purpose is to reduce the cost barrier associated with 4-H events and activities. If you are planning to participate in a 4-H event and feel like you could benefit from this fund, reach out to the extension office at zachary.rozmiarek@wisc.edu for more information.
