Make Plans to Attend District 2 Town Hall
Join Council Member David Little at the District 2 Town Hall on Thursday, April 30, at 5:30 p.m. at the Residences at Wellpoint, 2940 Mill Run Rd., Owens Cross Roads. Joining Council Member Little will be Urban & Economic Development Director Shane Davis, Manager of Urban and Long-Range Planning Dennis Madsen, Huntsville City Schools Superintendent Dr. Clarence Sutton and Huntsville City Schools Board of Education District 2 Member Holly McCarty.

Governors Drive Corridor Study
The City has contracted with Alta Planning + Design for the Governors Drive Corridor Study & Medical District Safety Action Plan with the objective of improving safety and accessibility to Huntsville Hospital and surrounding offices. The study area is an 8.85-mile stretch along Governors Drive from 14th Street on the west end to Caldwell Lane in the Big Cove area with an emphasis on a one-square-mile area in the Medical District.

Support for Free 2 Teach Helping Students
Council Member Little recently allocated $5,000 from the District 2 Council Improvement Fund to Free 2 Teach to help provide school supplies for Huntsville City Schools students.  Free 2 Teach is dedicated to supplying free classroom materials to public schools across Madison and Limestone Counties, helping ensure students and teachers have the tools they need to succeed.

Big Spring Park Expansion Underway
Work has started on the Big Spring Park expansion at the former City Hall site and General Services Director Ricky Wilkinson provides an early update in this video. The project will add about 2.4 acres to Big Spring Park on the east side of Church Street and include amenities such as accessible walking paths throughout the site, an event pavilion and public restrooms.

Speaking to Civic Engagement Academy
Council Member Little recently spoke to the Spring 2026 cohort of the Civic Engagement Academy as part of the “Our City Growing” session. He enjoyed connecting with participants as they began their journey to learn more about city government and strengthen their roles as community leaders.

Mayor's Youth Advisory Council Opens Applications  
Applications are now open for high school students to be a part of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council’s 2026-27 cohort. The Council is a yearlong leadership and civic engagement program that empowers high school students to learn about local government and serve their community. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, April 21.

Earth Day at Hays Nature Preserve  
Earth Day at Hays Nature Preserve, one of Huntsville's favorite events each year, is April 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It's a free, family-friendly event with food, hands-on exhibits, exotic animals and informative presentations. Overflow parking will be available at Mark Russell Recreation Center and Orbit buses will provide free transportation to the nature preserve.

Huntsville Business Leaders Visit Montgomery  
Huntsville and Madison County were well represented with more than 120 people traveling to Montgomery on March 3-4 for the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce’s annual trip to the state capital. The group heard from state leaders presenting on a variety of topics and the trip culminated with a luncheon keynote address by Gov. Kay Ivey.
