Register for CAAP's Community Action Conversation on DEI!

Tuesday, September 28, 2021, 2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., ET
Join Community Action Agencies across Pennsylvania for a lively conversation about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and the role Community Action Agencies play in advancing social justice issues across the state. We will have a short review on the history of race and social justice within Community Action. Then, Agency leaders, board members, and longtime Community Action advocates will discuss aspects of new initiatives to bring justice to those who face obstacles of poverty. A conversation with attendees will round out the event. The web meeting will be hosted by Winslow Mason, CAAP’s Senior Director for Strategic Change. Click here to register for this virtual event. For more information, contact Winslow Mason, CAAP Senior Director for Strategic Change at winslow@thecaap.org.

New Book Provides Easy-To-Digest Framework To Help Leaders Understand The Impacts Of Racism

Former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho helps leaders get comfortable when faced with uncomfortable conversations about race. In his book, Uncomfortable Conversations With A Black Man, Acho helps readers understand implicit bias, white privilege, and systemic racism. He also helps readers dispel the "angry black man" myth, explains who can and cannot say the N-word and gives readers a framework on how to be an ally in the fight against racism. His use of humor and conversational tone makes this an easy but compelling read. For more information, click here.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiatives Threatened As Critical Race Theory (CRT) Debate Escalates

Critical Race Theory is controversial. Many consider the opposition strategy to be designed to sow racial division across the country and threaten to halt any conversation or teaching about race in America. In their article, As Schools Expand Racial Equity Work, Conservatives See A New Threat In Critical Race Theory, Washington Post reporters Laura Meckler and Hannah Natanson provide an update on the CRT debate. Also, Black News Tonight anchor Marc Lamont Hill interviews Robin DiAngelo, PhD, on her new book, Nice Racism, in which she refers to the teaching of CRT as the new racial boogeyman to frighten whites.
