Have You Visited our Resource Center Lately?

Blog Post: Solar Eclipse 2017 - Programming More Important Leading Up to the Eclipse Than Day Of
A STAR_Net Blog Guest Post by Dennis Schatz and Andrew Fraknoi

A number of libraries have written to inquire about how to be part of the Moore Foundation grant to get eclipse viewing glasses and information even though they are closed on Mondays, which means they won’t be open when the August 21, 2017 solar eclipse occurs.  The answer to whether they can still be involved is a definite YES.

Programming in the weeks and months leading up to the eclipse is, in many ways, more important than what we do on the day of the eclipse.

Hands-on STEM: Paint The Sun

Invite elementary-aged children to paint pictures of the Sun using tempera paints on black construction paper, using a "patting" motion to create a granular effect that is similar to the appearance of the Sun's surface. Make Moon disks from sheets of black and white paper (or save time by preparing them ahead of time), and send the children home with the Moon disks and brads to complete their art projects. When the Moon disk is attached to the Sun painting with a brad, the Moon can be moved to cover the Sun -- just like during a solar eclipse!

Access step-by-step instructions for this art project, as well as extensions to foster reading and writing, through the Making a Solar Eclipse Book lesson plan. Write your own review of the activity and post tips for others through the STAR_Net STEM Activity Clearinghouse
