Hello, Gaucho parents & families!

As we wrap up winter quarter, we wish you and your students a restful and rejuvenating spring break. This month's newsletter includes reminders as students prepare to return to campus for spring quarter, information about summer courses, community housing resources, and more.

Reminders & Announcements

Students, staff, and faculty are reminded to pick up a rapid COVID-19 test on campus before Spring Break commences and use it to test for the virus before returning to campus (especially if traveling over the break). In addition, community members are advised to not come to campus if feeling ill, to isolate if possible, and to self-report positive test results via the Student Health Patient Portal. Additional information, including information about booster shot compliance and planned summer programs, can be found in the March 7 campus communication.
Spring Break is also an opportunity to plan ahead and start packing early. Reduce move-out stress in June by encouraging your student to take non-essentials home during Spring Break. Visit the Move Out web pages for more information.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Grad Slam — a UC-wide competition that began at UC Santa Barbara — which showcases graduate students as they present their research in 3-minute talks for the chance to win cash prizes. Learn more about UCSB’s livestreamed final showcase on April 14.

Men's Basketball Punches Ticket To March Madness

The UC Santa Barbara Men's Basketball team played in their second Big West Championship game in three seasons, taking on the Cal State Fullerton Titans. When the final buzzer went off, it was the Gauchos who were on top as they won The Big West Championship with a score of 72-62. The Gauchos moved on to the NCAA Tournament, where they fought hard against Baylor in a 74-56 loss. Congratulations to the team on a great season! Alumni and former staff member establish fellowship for Iranian women

In memory of the tragic death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022, members of the UC Santa Barbara community came together to create the Mahsa Amini Graduate Fellowship. The fellowship honors the courage and struggles of Iranian women and their bravery in pursuing an education so far from home. Learn more on The Current.

Resources of the Month

University & Community Housing Services

University & Community Housing Services handles all UCSB housing processes and offers community housing resources such as rental listings and advice, and conflict resolution. Talk to experienced staff members who will answer your questions and provide guidance regarding various complex housing situations. Visit their office on the 3rd floor of the University Center, or contact them by email at housinginfo@housing.ucsb.edu.

Summer Sessions

Did you know that students who take classes during Summer are around 30% more likely to graduate on time? In addition, Summer offers students opportunities to participate in unique programs and courses that aren’t offered during the academic year, such as creating an original environmental documentary through the Coastal Media Project, exploring the intersection of technology and the humanities in our Creative Computing courses, or getting real world experience through field study and internships.

For students who have other summer plans, but still want to make progress toward their degrees, Summer Sessions offers a robust lineup of fully online courses, and new online courses are being added to the schedule frequently.

In order to make Summer affordable and accessible to all students, in 2023 we are offering a 10-unit fee cap to undergraduate students. No matter how many units a student registers for, they will be charged for no more than 10! Financial aid is also available for eligible students, as are a number of financial incentives, including the Summer Access Grant and course scholarships.
