Rabbi Nehemia Polen, Hebrew College Rabbinical School

“When I first came to Hebrew College, my specialty was Kabbalah and Hasidism—the Jewish mystical tradition. While I continue to teach these areas, in recent years I have developed another focus—Hebrew Bible and the book of Leviticus in particular. Many people find Leviticus difficult and opaque, and there is particular excitement in bringing out the elegance, wisdom and relevance of this key biblical book.”

(Re)Arranging A World of Chesed
|
|
|
The Ancient Israelites, and our Sages, teach us that the Mishkan is a microcosm of the world. Given that, why do commentators pay so much attention to creation, whereas the Torah itself pays so much attention to the Mishkan? What might we learn from the fact that our Torah places so much emphasis on this particular microcosm of the world, while our communities often do not? The Mishkan offers a profound lesson about the nature of our world; it is not just a representation of our cosmos physically, but also of its essence and values. The verse “Olam Chesed Yibaneh,” (Psalms 89:3) can be read interpretively as “the world is built with chesed.”

“I Learned to Embrace Who I Am”: Sustaining Gratitude from a Recent Grad
|
|
|
“Sometime in the last year I became a Hebrew College sustainer, or monthly donor. Hebrew College prepared me to do the work I want to do in the world. I don’t think I would have fallen in love with the rabbinate in quite the way I did at any other place. I benefitted from financial aid for my last four years in a really significant way — I would not have been able to continue without that support. My hope is that my monthly giving helps students access aid.”
— Rabbi Yael Werber `21

A poem in response to a mishnah about the sanctity of life
By Itmar Leibowitz, Teen Beit Midrash of Hebrew College Student
|
|
|
The creation of Adam has set forth the reality,
that all human beings are lonely,
Empty,
Destitute…
‘Tis the burden that all are tasked with carrying on their frail shoulders.
No matter how much one tries,
To rid themselves of loneliness,
That the echoes of their isolation roar even louder.
One can never fully resolve their solitude,
For the only person that they can ever fully empathize with, and understand,
Is their own self...

In Memoriam: Rabbi Ellen Bernstein, MJS`06
|
| |
Hebrew College mourns the passing of Rabbi Ellen Bernstein z"l, author, activist, and “birthmother" of contemporary Jewish environmentalism. She earned her Master of Jewish Education from Hebrew College in 2006 and later worked as a grant writer for the College, bringing her characteristic passion, intellect, and imagination to everything she did.
May her memory be a blessing.
