Garrison Coley Home and Office Transitions
Garrison Coley, a third-generation entrepreneur in high-end furnishings, started a sales representative company in Nashville after graduating from Young Harris College in Georgia. Spotting industry gaps, he acquired and expanded a local moving company, later adding an interior designer division to serve interior designers in Middle Tennessee. Today, his companies offer full-suite services including furniture sales, consulting, receiving, warehousing, inventory management, project coordination, and installation.
What is a personal piece of advice (business advice/saying/quote) that you lean on and could pass on to others? "Stay focused on your lane." As an entrepreneur, your vision and skills shape your business trajectory. With constant distractions, maintaining course can be challenging. It's crucial to periodically reassess your progress, realign your goals, and keep moving forward.
Best business book you’ve ever read? "My Father's Business" by Cal Turner Jr. was a book I related to and highly enjoyed. Cal, a second-generation leader of The Dollar General company, shares a vulnerable, candid, and exciting narrative of his journey in this autobiography. It's a tale of familial legacy with the joys and pitfalls that accompany it. Plus, the Nashville settings adds an extra layer of enjoyment!
One misstep you took in your business that you could caution others about? Rushing significant growth initiatives. The thrill of rapid business expansion can be overpowering. However, without focused attention, it's easy to become overwhelmed. I've learned firsthand that there's wisdom in the saying, "I've never seen a ship sink by loading it slowly - only by loading it too fast." Balancing asset acquisitions with financial management is critical.
How to you de-stress after a particularly hard day? Maintaining my backyard is how I relax - some find this the opposite of relaxation! I have a large willow tree that is very, very thirsty requiring year-round management to keep my grass, garden, and landscaping maintained and beautiful. It is very rewarding and my wife and I really enjoy doing this together.
What’s something about you that would surprise everyone reading this? I grew up on an animal rescue and equestrian farm. My mother was, and still very much is, an animal lover and an animal rescue advocate. Each month it seemed we had a new and unique rescue. We once had a rescued llama named Steve!
What part of EO are you most looking forward to? I am a constant student and I love to learn. Embracing the ethos of EO, I am excited to connect with and learn from so many dynamic entrepreneurs.
Any exciting plans for 2024? This year, I'm exploring the acquisition of another local company which provides complementary services to my existing offerings.
